The Bike Experience Fourfold Spanngummi / 60cmSporty bike types are usually delivered without a rack from the factory: road bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes and cyclocross bikes do without one to save weight and maintain agility. Many fitness bikes and urban singlespeed bikes also do not have a factory-installed rack. Nevertheless, these bikes can often be retrofitted – the mounting options depend on the frame. On frames with eyelets on the seatstay and chainstay, classic racks are screwed on. For frames without eyelets, there are thru-axle adapters (such as the Ortlieb Quick Rack or Topeak Zi:RAK Thru-Axle) that attach the rack to the rear axle. Seatpost racks clamp directly to the seatpost and are suitable for light loads. Racks that mount on the disc brake caliper mount are also an option for modern sport bikes.
Why a rack? With racks, it is possible to distribute loads on the rear wheel instead of the front wheel. This makes the handling considerably more controlled and safer. Starting off, braking, taking corners: with better weight distribution, cycling runs more smoothly. And as nice as a handlebar basket may be: safety comes first. Racks ensure safe transport, even of heavier items. That is why sometimes you need to retrofit your sporty bike and buy a rack for your bicycle at Radfieber.
Bags, panniers, backpacks, school bags and small (fruit) boxes can be stably placed on a rack without any problems. If it is something larger, secure bulky items safely with a tension strap. Quickly take a small crate of drinks to the next party; transport packages, boxes, cartons, tool cases and houseplants for a move as well as picnic blankets, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, yes, even entire tents for a camping trip: a bicycle rack offers many possibilities – the combination of rack and tension strap even more.
Short rides in summer, longer bike rides or entire tours: even a light backpack quickly gives you an unpleasantly sweaty back. This can be avoided by using a rack. Not to mention heavy school bags; in addition to a sticky back, back pain is inevitable. But if cycling is meant to keep you fit, it must also be gentle on the back. How comfortable a rack is – simply clamp the backpack, bag or satchel and enjoy the ride.
