Panniers are ideal for transporting groceries, change of clothes or picnic supplies – they keep the weight low and at the rear wheel, which improves riding comfort on flat roads. But as soon as it goes uphill, around curves with a full load or into a headwind, the heavy bags make themselves felt negatively: the bike becomes more tippy, rear wheel traction suffers, and the braking effect changes noticeably. A backpack, on the other hand, keeps the weight on the body, centered close to the rider's center of gravity, and enables significantly better balance when steering, braking and cornering.
