LightSKIN LED Handlebar Akku 700mmThe first bicycle lighting was the oil lantern, invented in the early 19th century. In 1896 the company Pintsch introduced a gas incandescent lamp for bicycles. Following Thomas Edison's invention of the light bulb, the first electric bicycle lamps appeared in 1898, initially relying on dry-cell batteries. In 1930 the German manufacturer Union introduced the first hub dynamo, which powered the front and rear light. Since then bicycle lighting has continuously evolved to improve road safety.
Today power is mainly supplied through three methods: hub dynamo, battery or rechargeable battery. Hub dynamos generate power while riding and are low-maintenance. Battery lights like those from Sigma and LightSKIN offer flexible use without cables. Sidewall dynamos and roller dynamos are still occasionally used. LED has largely prevailed as the light source – it is efficient, durable and bright. Light intensity is measured in lux: entry-level models offer 10–30 lux, while powerful front lights achieve 80 lux or more.
Front lights illuminate the road and make you visible to others. High-quality front lights like the Sigma AURA 80 offer 80 lux brightness. Modern bicycle headlights feature functions such as high beam that automatically dips for oncoming traffic, or curve lighting that adapts the beam when leaning. Daytime running light modes increase visibility even during the day. StVZO approval is mandatory in Germany and ensures glare-free, asymmetric light distribution.
Rear lights ensure you are seen from behind in time. Models like the Sigma Nugget II or Blaze are compact and powerful. Many rear lights feature standlight that continues to glow for several minutes after stopping – a crucial safety advantage in city traffic. Rack-mounted rear lights like the Topeak Rack RedLite can be permanently installed. Brake light functions that shine brighter when decelerating are also available on some modern models.
