Schwalbe – from Korea to Germany

The name “Schwalbe” is the German translation of the original product name Swallow (English for “Schwalbe” – the bird). The founder Ralf Bohle imported tires from Korea in 1973 that were called Swallow there into Germany. Since Germany was one of the most important markets at the time, he chose the translation “Schwalbe” for the German market – a short and memorable brand name that evokes positive associations such as lightness, speed, movement, and good mood.

The Schwalbe brand was founded in 1922 in Bergneustadt and originally exported bicycle parts. From 1973 onward, the company focused exclusively on bicycle tires and tubes and launched high-quality tires under the name Schwalbe. Since then, Schwalbe has established itself as one of the leading tire manufacturers in Europe, known for innovation, quality, and a wide product range for different cycling and everyday applications.

Schwalbe – Bicycle Tyres from Bergneustadt

The Schwalbe brand was founded in 1922 in Bergneustadt, North Rhine-Westphalia, and initially exported bicycle parts. The company name derives from the translation of the original Korean product name "Swallow", which means "Schwalbe" in German. Founder Ralf Bohle began importing tyres from Korea in 1973 that were sold under the name Swallow there. For the German market he chose the translated version "Schwalbe" – a short, memorable name that evokes lightness and speed. Since 1973 the company has focused exclusively on bicycle tyres and tubes and has grown into one of Europe's leading tyre manufacturers.

The very first product under the Schwalbe name was an imported bicycle tyre from Korea. Over time in-house developments followed, including the Marathon series for touring riders, the Rocket Rick series for mountain bikes and the G-One family for gravel bikes. The current range covers tyres for nearly every area of use from city bikes to road racing machines. Schwalbe introduced innovations such as Tubeless Easy Technology (TLE), RaceGuard puncture protection and the ADDIX rubber compound. The line-up was continuously expanded to include inner tubes and accessories.

Schwalbe products are sold in bicycle shops, sports chains and online stores in more than sixty countries worldwide. The exact number of sales outlets amounts to several thousand dealers. The company maintains sales offices in Europe, Asia and North America. The headquarters remain in Bergneustadt, where parts of the production and all development work are located.

Within the G-One gravel tyre range a choice can be made between different tread patterns and carcass levels. The models differ in knob design, puncture protection and rubber compound. The spectrum ranges from fast semi-slick tyres with low rolling resistance to aggressive offroad profiles with maximum traction. The tyres are available in widths from 40 to 50 millimetres and can be run tubeless thanks to TLE technology. The colour selection includes black and classic-skin sidewalls.

  • Schwalbe G-ONE BITE Tyre Evo Super Ground TLE 40-622 / black – an offroad-oriented gravel tyre with an open tread pattern and reinforced outer blocks that provide high cornering stability and give it the namesake "bite". Unlike the Ultrabite it has a less aggressive knob layout and is intended as a rear-wheel partner for the Ultrabite on the front. The Super Ground carcass offers a balanced compromise between puncture protection and weight.
  • Schwalbe G-ONE OVERLAND Tyre Speed Grip Super Ground TLE – a versatile gravel and touring tyre with a closed centre tread for smooth rolling on tarmac and pronounced outer knobs for cornering grip off road. Compared with the RS and R its focus lies on durability rather than maximum speed, making it particularly suitable for e-bikes and long journeys. The Super Ground carcass is paired with a Speed Grip compound.
  • Schwalbe G-ONE R Tyre Evo Super Race V-Guard TLE – a high-performance gravel tyre for mixed terrain with a boomerang profile and angled side knobs that deliver reliable grip even in wet conditions. Together with the RS it belongs to the PRO line featuring the lightest Super Race carcass and V-Guard puncture protection. It is available in 40 and 45 millimetre widths.
  • Schwalbe G-ONE RS Tyre Evo Super Race V-Guard TLE – a fast semi-slick tyre with a scale-like tread that offers the lowest rolling resistance of the entire G-One range and is optimised for rides with a high proportion of asphalt. Deepened side knobs provide cornering stability when the surface changes. Like the G-One R it uses the Super Race carcass and ADDIX Race compound.
  • Schwalbe G-ONE ULTRABITE Tyre Performance RaceGuard TLE 50-622 / classic-skin – a robust offroad tyre with an aggressive cassette-knob tread in the centre and sturdy side knobs, designed for use on gravel, forest paths and trails. At 50 millimetres width and 665 grams it is the widest and heaviest tyre in the series. It is intended as a front tyre in combination with the G-One Bite or G-One Allround on the rear and features a classic-skin sidewall.
