Without Bike Pumps Nothing Works

Well-inflated bicycle tyres provide more safety, better handling and shorter braking distances as they offer stable grip and control. They also reduce rolling resistance and wear, making riding easier and extending the life of tyres and rims. Nothing is used as often as the bike pump; without bike pumps nothing works!

Air Pump: Mini Pump or Floor Pump?

An air pump is not just an air pump: do you need a mini pump for on the go or a comfortable floor pump for home? Probably both.

Normally you prefer the comfortable floor pump to supply your bike with air before a tour without bending down. Bicycle tyres should be checked briefly before every ride – a look and a quick thumb pressure test are often enough. At least once a week the tyre pressure should be checked with a gauge and topped up if necessary, as tyres slowly lose air even when not in use. The correct tyre pressure is usually printed on the tyre sidewall and varies by tyre type between 2.0 and 8.0 bar (road bikes 6–8 bar, mountain bikes 2–3.5 bar, city and trekking bikes 3.5–5.5 bar). The pressure is checked with a gauge – either on a floor pump, a mini pump with pressure display, or a separate tyre pressure gauge.

For longer tours or emergencies, the mini pump is always a good thing – whether for yourself or fellow riders. Especially on off-road rides, air escapes from the tyres more quickly. With a hand pump attached to the bike frame, soft tyres can be remedied immediately. With optimally inflated tyres, riding comfort is maintained throughout the tour and riding safety does not suffer either. Even if you have a puncture, repeated pumping can prevent the bike from being left stranded. Thanks to an emergency pump, the situation can be bridged until the tyre can be replaced or repaired.

Air Pumps – Not Just for Bicycles

Bicycle air pumps can also be used for many other things. Floor pumps with a gauge are ideal for inflating car tyres, motorcycle tyres and trailers – especially during leisure time or on trips when no petrol station pump is nearby. Balls of all kinds – footballs, basketballs, volleyballs, handballs or rugby balls – can be quickly and precisely inflated with a suitable needle adapter. Most Topeak floor pumps come with appropriate adapters.

Air mattresses, inflatable swimming aids, inflatable boats and stand-up paddle boards can be effortlessly filled with a powerful floor pump or an electric pump such as the Voxom EPu2. Gym balls and exercise balls also need air regularly – the gauge is helpful here to achieve the exact right pressure. Children's vehicles such as balance bikes, Bobby Cars or scooters often have Schrader valves (car valves) that are compatible with bicycle pumps.

Even around the house, air pumps find use: inflatable cushions and mattresses for guests, bubble wrap for moving or inflatable decorations can be filled with them. If you light a fireplace or grill, you can use a mini pump to supply additional air and get the fire going faster. A mini pump with a thin attachment is also suitable for cleaning keyboards or sensitive devices, blowing dust out of hard-to-reach corners. The Topeak JOE BLOW SPORT III, with its supplied adapters, is a true multi-talent for bicycle, car, ball and leisure.
