The Breezer brand was founded in the USA in 1977 and stands for bicycle innovation from the USA as well as a light, airy riding experience. Breezer started as a manufacturer of mountain bikes, but quickly brought bicycle innovation from the USA to gravel, city, and trekking bikes as well. Breezer bicycles are characterized by robust frames, precise handling, and well-thought-out geometries that reflect bicycle innovation from the USA.
Breezer 2024 INVERSION PRO Pearl Navy BlueBreezer Bikes was founded in 1977 by Joe Breeze in Mill Valley, California, in Marin County – the birthplace of mountain biking. Joe Breeze, an avid road cyclist and frame builder, built the Breezer #1 in September 1977, the first mountain bike in the world designed from the ground up. Until then, riders had been modifying old cruiser bikes for off-road use – Breezer, by contrast, created a stable, lightweight chromoly steel frame specifically designed for off-road riding. On its maiden ride, it immediately won the legendary Repack race. By spring 1978, he had built nine more Breezers. The brand name is simply derived from his surname: among friends, the bikes were simply called "Breezers" – and the name stuck to this day. The Breezer #1 is now part of the collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
The first model was the Breezer Series I, designed exclusively as a mountain bike. The 1980s saw the Series II (1980–81) and the more aggressive Series III (from 1983). Joe Breeze also developed the world's first dropper post (Hite-Rite) and the Uni-Crown fork for Tange. In 1986, he launched the "American Breezer," the first aluminum mountain bike on the market. The 1990s brought models such as the Breezer Lightning, Thunder, and Storm. From 2002, Breezer focused entirely on the utility bike segment with models like the Villager, Uptown, and Citizen – fully equipped everyday bikes. Later, Breezer returned to the sport segment with models such as the Repack and Supercell (full suspension with MLink system), the Cloud 9 (first carbon model), as well as adventure bikes for bikepacking.
Breezer bikes are now distributed worldwide through dealers in the USA, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The brand is now part of BikeCo, LLC and is particularly strong in North America. Since its founding, Breezer has produced tens of thousands of bicycles and is recognized as the first mountain bike brand in the world – a pioneer that made the entire off-road sport possible in the first place.
