The first official patent holder for a folding bike was the American Emmit G. Latta, who filed his invention on September 16, 1887. Military interest in folding bikes arose in the 1890s, particularly in France, where Charles Morel and Captain Henry Gérard developed a successful folding bike for the army from 1894 onward and produced it in series. During the Second Boer War and later in World War II, folding bikes were used by paratroopers, including the well-known BSA folding bike of the British army. These early folding bikes were robustly built and served primarily for rapid troop movement on the battlefield.
In the 1970s, the folding bike experienced a renaissance with models such as the Raleigh Twenty and the Bickerton Portable. The real breakthrough, however, came in the 1980s with the founding of Brompton and Dahon. London engineer Andrew Ritchie invented the Brompton folding bike in 1975 in his apartment overlooking the Brompton Oratory and began series production in a small workshop in 1988. His patented three-part folding system transformed the bike into a compact package in less than 20 seconds. In 1982, physicist Dr. David Hon together with his brother Henry Hon founded Dahon, which grew to become the world's largest manufacturer of folding bikes and significantly shaped the industry with over 300 patents.
