The first bicycle locks appeared at the end of the 19th century with the bicycle boom. In 1890, the American company Yale patented a padlock for bicycles that was guided through the spokes with a curved shackle. In the 1920s, Abus – founded in 1924 by August Bremicker and his sons in Wetter an der Ruhr – introduced the first special bicycle padlocks made of hardened steel. In the 1930s, the company Fichter & Co. in Munich developed the first frame lock, which was permanently mounted on the bicycle frame. In the 1970s, U-locks and chain locks made of hardened steel came onto the market, offering more security with a thicker design. The 2000s brought folding locks like the ABUS BORDO, whose articulated steel segments can be transported compactly, and textile locks made of high-strength fabric like tex-lock ORBIT and EYELET.
