The development of reflective socks began with the invention of retroreflective material by 3M: in 1939, the first traffic signs with Scotchlite reflective material were installed on a highway in Minnesota. In 1951, 3M introduced the first reflective material for textile fabrics – the foundation for reflective clothing. In the 1970s and 1980s, the first sportswear and leisurewear with Scotchlite strips appeared, including running shoes, jackets and vests. The breakthrough for reflective socks specifically for cyclists was achieved by American Ben O'Brien: during his work at Avery Dennison (2010–2015), he developed reflective transfer films for brands such as Nike and Adidas. The idea for a reflective sock came to him in 2016 in Montreal, when he was cycling with his family in the evening and noticed how visible the reflectors on pedals and spokes were – and that a large reflective area at the ankle should have the same effect. In 2017, he founded ReflecToes in St. George, Utah, and launched the first specially developed reflective sports sock. The principle behind it is called biomotion: the human eye instinctively recognizes natural movement patterns – reflective elements on the legs (ankle, calf) make cyclists and runners visible to drivers significantly earlier and better than reflective dots on the upper body.
Modern reflective cycling socks are made of functional materials: nylon and polyester for moisture transport and quick drying, elastane/spandex for fit and elasticity, CoolMax for sweat wicking and merino wool for temperature regulation. Reflection is achieved through 3M Scotchlite transfer films, reflective yarns or large-area reflective prints. Today, brands such as ReflecToes, Cycology, DeFeet and many others offer reflective socks in various heights (18 cm calf height), colors and designs – from subtle reflective logos to fully reflective socks. Compression elements, reinforced heel and toe areas (Cordura at DeFeet) and breathable mesh zones complement the safety function with wearing comfort and durability.
