With the rise of racing and longer distances, fluid supply on the road became more important. In Italy – then the centre of cycling – manufacturers such as Cinelli and Regina developed the first plastic water bottles with matching cages made of aluminium or steel wire around 1965, which were screwed to the frame tube. The idea spread quickly: in 1968 the French company Zéfal launched the first series-production water bottle with cage. The purpose was clear – no water, no performance, and the bottle cage made drinking while riding possible for the first time.
Today bottle cages are available in numerous versions. Classic models are made of aluminium, carbon or plastic and are attached to the frame with two screws. In addition there are cages for XL bottles, insulated bottles, folding cages for tight frames and multifunctional cages that also hold tools or CO2 cartridges. Brands such as Elite, Tacx, CamelBak, Specialized, SKS and Topeak offer models for every area of use – from road bikes to mountain bikes. Some cages are side-loading, others top-loading. Weights range from ultralight 18 g carbon cages to robust plastic models.
