Depending on how you use your bike, you'll need to choose the right tread. Smooth bicycle tires are more suitable for asphalt, narrow tires for fast riding, and for off-road riding you need more tread and width. And how can you determine the right tire size for your bike? There are several reliable ways – it's best to combine them:
The easiest method. The size is printed on the sidewall of the tire. There are three different units of measurement:
The ETRO specification is recommended, unambiguous, and most reliable. For example: ETRO: 37-622. This means: tire width 37 mm and rim diameter 622 mm.
If the rim size is no longer legible on the tire sidewall, you can also find it on the rim itself (small sticker) or in the bike manual. The rim diameter/bead seat diameter/BSD (Bead Seat Diameter) must be correct, otherwise the tire could come off.
While there cannot be too many deviations in rim size, the tire width can vary more. Depending on the area of application, several tire widths can be safely mounted on one rim.
The inner rim width (also known as the rim width) is decisive for the maximum possible tire width. On the other hand, you should allow for a few millimeters of clearance – especially if you have mudguards or ride off-road through mud. Since it is not that easy to measure the inner width of the rim (i.e., the point where the tire sits) yourself, it is better to visit a specialist dealer for expert advice than to apply rules of thumb. Tubeless tires do not require inner tubes and fit airtight directly onto the rim. Instead of an inner tube, sealant inside the tire ensures that small holes are automatically sealed. This keeps the air pressure stable – often you don't even notice the defect. Radfieber also offers tubeless tires – ideal for off-road tours with MTBs or gravel bikes, as they are much less prone to punctures, are also much lighter, and still have more grip.
