Bicycle chains need regular maintenance because they are permanently exposed to dirt, dust, sand and moisture. These particles settle between the chain links and act like sandpaper, causing premature wear of the chain, chainrings and sprockets. Wetness and road salt in winter also promote corrosion and rust formation. An unmaintained chain increases friction resistance, impairs shifting performance and reduces the lifespan of the entire drivetrain manifold.
How often the chain needs to be maintained depends on the riding conditions. For rides on dry roads, cleaning and lubrication every 200 to 300 kilometres is sufficient. In wet, muddy or dusty conditions, the chain should be cleaned and oiled after every second or third ride. A simple test: if the chain runs dry or squeaks while riding, maintenance is overdue. Even with little use, the chain should be checked at least once a month, as lubricants can evaporate or become resinous.
For maintenance, special chain oils or waxes are used. Dry lubricants (wax or PTFE oil) are suitable for dry conditions as they do not attract dirt. Wet lubricants (oil) are better for rain and wetness as they are water-repellent, but attract more dirt. Cleaning is done with a degreaser and a chain cleaning brush or a chain cleaner tool. After cleaning, the chain is wiped dry, then one drop of oil is applied to each chain link's outer side. Excess oil is wiped off after a short exposure time – otherwise it will drip onto the frame and wheels.
