Bike Bags – from Early Designs to Today's Functionality

The first bike bags that could be attached directly to the bicycle appeared at the end of the 19th century. With the invention of the safety bicycle and pneumatic tyres by John Boyd Dunlop in 1888, the bicycle became suitable for everyday use. Soon people wanted not only to ride but also to transport things. Around 1890 the French company Bianchi (then still active as an accessory manufacturer) brought the first leather bags with strap mounts to market, which were strapped to handlebars and racks. In England, the company Brooks – known for leather saddles – developed the first saddlebags made of leather with metal frames around 1900. The purpose was clear: commuters needed space for change of clothes, shopping or tools. The bags were waterproofed with grease and closed with brass buckles.

Leather bags with strap fastening remained the standard until the 1970s. In the 1980s, the German Hartmut Ortlieb revolutionised the market: he developed the first waterproof bike bag made of PVC-coated nylon with the patented roll closure and the quick-release system that allowed tool-free removal. Ortlieb founded his company in Nuremberg in 1982 and set new standards. In the 1990s, lighter materials such as Cordura and ripstop nylon emerged, complemented by click systems from Racktime and Tubus. Today, manufacturers such as Topeak, Ortlieb, Brooks and otinga offer highly specialised bags for every purpose: handlebar bags with smartphone compartment, frame bags with hydration system, fork bags for bikepacking and saddle bags with compression function. Waterproof roll closures, reflective elements, hook-and-loop and quick-release fasteners as well as sustainable materials are standard today.

Bike Bags – Upgrade Racks, Frames and Handlebars

Radfieber offers a diverse range to upgrade the transport options of your bicycle. The respective bag types are attached to the handlebars, rack or various places on the frame:

Depending on how much and what needs to be transported, you can fully utilise the possibilities of your bike with different bike bags.

Bike Bag: Waterproof & Plenty of Volume

Whether cycling to work in the rain, to school, shopping or on a big tour through the countryside: with a bike bag you can safely transport quite a lot, even over long distances. Depending on your needs, whether tools for a puncture, provisions for a bike tour or space for the weekly shopping: choose a bike bag with the appropriate volume. Waterproof zips or roll closures, water-repellent materials and waterproof inner bags protect tools from rust, electronic devices from damage and other equipment or goods from getting wet.
