Bicycle horns – small, loud, and sometimes just wonderfully embarrassing

Bicycle horns are small devices that loudly draw attention to themselves, because bicycle horns – small, loud, and sometimes just wonderfully embarrassing – bring more assertiveness to bike paths. In city traffic or on crowded bike paths, bicycle horns – small, loud, and sometimes just wonderfully embarrassing – show their strength when a friendly ring of the bell isn't enough. Children and adults love bicycle horns – small, loud, and sometimes just wonderfully embarrassing – because despite their size, they are loud and noticeable, and sometimes just wonderfully embarrassing.

How the Bicycle Learned to Honk

The first bicycle bells appeared at the end of the 19th century. With the increasing popularity of the bicycle in the 1880s, the need for acoustic signals to warn pedestrians and other road users grew. In 1896 the German Albert Rüegg filed a patent for a bicycle bell with a metal cup and clapper that was clamped to the handlebar. Similar designs came from the French company Le Cyclo and the English brand Lucas. The mechanism was simple: a spring-loaded clapper struck a brass cup, triggered by a thumb lever. By the 1920s bells became mandatory equipment – in Germany the StVZO introduced the bell as a required signalling device in 1934.

Initially there were only bicycle bells. The first bicycle horn was the Klaxon, invented by the American Miller Reese Hutchison and patented in 1908. The Klaxon produced a loud, penetrating sound by means of an electromagnetically operated metal diaphragm. Hutchison sold his invention to the Lovell-McConnell Manufacturing Company in Newark, New Jersey, which first installed the Klaxon on bicycles and automobiles from 1908. The name derives from the ancient Greek klazō, meaning "I shriek".

Today bicycle horns come in many variants. The classic brass bell with thumb lever is still common. In addition there are compressed air and gas pump horns with loud sounds for city traffic. Electronic battery-powered horns produce various bell or honking sounds. As an alternative to the bell, squeaky ducks such as the Liix Deko Duck have become established – they squeak when pressed and serve as decoration at the same time. Bicycle horns with integrated LED light are also available, combining signal and light functions.

There are various signalling and communication options for bicycles:
