Aluminium is lightweight, stable and cost-effective and therefore the standard for everyday and sports use. Carbon reduces weight and dampens vibrations, but is mainly used in road bike and high-end areas. Steel offers high robustness and elasticity, but is heavier. Titanium combines low weight with high durability, but remains rare due to cost.
Bike handlebars differ greatly in their shape. The most important types are drop bars for sporty riding positions, flat bars for mountain bikes and fitness bikes, riser bars with a slight upward sweep for more control off-road, bullhorn bars with forward-pointing ends for aerodynamic riding positions, as well as cruiser and city bars with a strongly curved shape for an upright sitting position. Each shape directly affects ergonomics, control and intended use.
Bike handlebars also vary in their dimensions. The width typically ranges between 360 and 440 mm for road bikes, and between 680 and 800 mm for mountain bikes. A greater width increases stability and control, a narrower width improves aerodynamics. The handlebar clamp diameter is usually 25.4 mm, 31.8 mm or 35 mm. Height and sweep also influence riding position and comfort. The right dimension depends on body build, shoulder width and area of use.
