The first special e-bike accessory was the battery. When the first e-bikes with hub motors appeared in the late 1980s, the battery initially consisted of lead-acid cells and was permanently built into the frame. It was heavy, had limited range and could not be removed. Not until the 1990s did the first removable nickel-cadmium batteries emerge, making it possible to charge at a household power outlet. Alongside, the first chargers with simple constant-current charging were developed. Without battery and charger the e-bike would never have been functional – they are the fundamental accessory without which no e-bike can operate.
With the spread of e-bikes in the 2000s, further accessories were added. Displays showing battery level, speed and assistance level became standard. Mid-drive motors from Bosch, Shimano and Brose required special motor mounts and chainrings. For security, e-bike locks with alarm functions were developed. Racks and panniers were reinforced to carry the higher total weight. Special tyres with reinforced casings for higher loads and speeds also entered the market.
Today e-bike accessories are more diverse than ever.
