Comfortable, functional, and featuring a minimalist design, Emil is a fully equipped e-bike with all the advantages of an all-rounder and state-of-the-art 9-speed Pinion gearbox. Thanks to the adapted Schindelhauer frame geometry with a longer head tube and shorter stem, this motorized bike offers a very comfortable riding position.
Cobblestone streets and rough park paths become your new favorite shortcuts thanks to the large-volume tires. The Gates Carbon Drive belt allows for three to four times the mileage of a chain—with the same efficiency but less maintenance and noise. Oiling and greasing are a thing of the past, as are dirty pants legs.
The frame is made of triple-butted AL6061-T6 aluminium, formed into an aero tube set and equipped with a forged bottom bracket shell, forged dropouts including sliding tensioner system and Schindelhauer belt port. The integrated motor plug, the integrated seatpost clamp, smoothed welds and internal cable routing create a flawless, reduced surface. A longer head tube, the shorter Satori Stealth aluminium stem and the Acros ICR 1.5-inch headset form a comfortable seating position in which even long stages are ridden in a relaxed way. The hydroformed aluminium fork with tapered head tube, internal cable routing, post mount brake mount and 15 mm through-axle is matched to the design line.
The Pinion C-Line gear unit with nine gears, developed by former Porsche engineers, works sequentially in the bottom bracket and shifts precisely both at standstill and while riding. With a spread of 568 percent, it covers flat city routes just as well as long climbs into the surrounding countryside. Because it sits directly in the chain of power, the rear wheel stays calm and the bearings are spared. Drive force is transmitted by a Gates Carbon Drive CDX toothed belt with 39 teeth at the front, 34/28 teeth at the rear and 118 or 115 teeth – three to four times the service life of a chain at the same efficiency, with less maintenance and a clean running result. Pinion bottom bracket, Pinion crankset and VP plastic pedals with grip tape and industrial bearings complete the drivetrain.
The heart of the bike is the Mahle X20 hub drive with 250 watts, 55 Nm of torque and support up to 25 km/h – more torque than any other motor generation of the range. The X20 Intube battery with around 250 Wh sits invisibly in the down tube, and the Mahle X20 head unit in the top tube takes over control and riding modes via Bluetooth and ANT+. The motor is integrated into the rear wheel hub via a 12 mm through-axle, while the wheel uses a straight-pull front hub disc. 55 Nm provide direct, quiet pull-away and sovereign power on every incline.
On 27.5-inch Kinlin TL23R rims with Sapim race spokes and three-fold and two-fold lacing run 50 mm wide Continental Contact Urban tyres with reflective strip – more comfort and ground reserve on cobblestones and park paths. Hydraulic Shimano MT200 disc brakes with 160 mm rotors deliver reliable deceleration. Schindelhauer CITY handlebar, Schindelhauer grips and seatpost as well as a Selle Royal Essenza moderate saddle form a coherent package oriented towards comfort.
The lighting consists of the LightSKIN Ultra-Mini-Light U2E at the front and the ILU jr. at the rear, both StVZO-approved and powered directly from the battery. With 150 lumens, the front light is the smallest StVZO-approved bicycle light in the world and is integrated flat into the Curana Apollo mudguard made of aluminium profile. The frame-mounted aluminium front rack with VarioStrap tensioning system holds luggage pieces of any shape securely and leaves the handling unchanged even with larger loads – the basis for weekend trips, multi-day tours and spontaneous bikepacking adventures. Added to this are the option of a kickstand, holders for bottle and lock as well as the possibility of fitting a frame lock. The total weight rating of 130 kg leaves plenty of room for shopping and luggage.
“Emil” is the male model name and stands for the diamond frame version of the range, whose female counterpart “Emilia” realises the same drive on a trapezoid frame with low entry. “IX” is the Roman nine and designates the nine gears of the Pinion C-Line gear unit; the six-speed edition runs as VI. “X20” names the drive generation from Mahle with 250 watts and 55 Newton metres as well as the head unit in the top tube – the successor generation X35 works with 40 Newton metres. “M (50cm)” refers to the frame size and “mineralgrau” to the colour.
The EMIL IX X20 is the most powerful configuration of the range: 55 Nm of torque against 40 Nm of the X35 generation – and therefore the choice for everyone who wants full reserve on steep climbs, with luggage or in headwind. Otherwise, equipment and technology remain at the same level: identical nine-speed Pinion gearbox with 568 percent spread, identical frame construction, identical mudguards, identical lighting and the same frame-mounted VarioStrap rack.
Wheels and tyres are also adapted to the generation: the X20 wheel with straight-pull front hub, Kinlin TL23R rims and Sapim race spokes in three-fold and two-fold lacing carries 50 mm wide Continental Contact Urban tyres, while the X35 version runs on Alexrims DP23 rims with 47 mm WTB Horizon tyres. On X20 the saddle is a Selle Royal Essenza moderate, while the X35 models ride with a Schindelhauer saddle. At 18.6 kg, the nine-speed version weighs 0.7 kg more than the 17.9 kg of the X35 – the trade-off for the higher torque. In terms of colour, the range is broader: mineral grey, midnight green and lavender blue are available with X20.
The EMIL IX X20 is aimed at everyone who is looking for a diamond frame, full equipment and the highest torque in the range. The 55 Nm provide quiet, decisive pull-away and bring reserve on hills, long climbs and in the foothills. Nine gears offer the matching shifting span, the 250 Wh carry the stop-and-go traffic and the commute comfortably, and the upright seating position with longer head tube and shorter stem keeps even long kilometres pleasant.
Emilia with trapezoid frame is the female counterpart; beyond that, the Schindelhauer programme includes Gustav and Greta as classic city bikes with Nexus hub gears, Arthur and Antonia as minimalist e-bikes with Mahle drive, Ludwig and Lotte as high-quality all-rounders with Alfine gear, Wilhelm as the gravel bike for terrain and tour, Siegfried and Hektor as two purist singlespeed models, Cato as the track bike and Neo as the compact 20-inch folding bike. The EMIL IX X20 is the most comprehensive variant of the electric line-up for commuters who want to combine equipment, classic frame and maximum drive output in one bike.
