Enable Youtube videosThe Marin Rift Zone EL1 brings the playful trail character of the Rift Zone family into the world of light e-mountain bikes. The abbreviation EL stands for "Electric Light": instead of simply equipping the classic trail bike with the most powerful drive possible, Marin relies on a balanced mix of assistance, low weight and natural handling. The result is an agile e-MTB that feels much closer to a classic mountain bike on the trail than many full-power e-MTBs.
The heart of the Rift Zone EL1 is the light Bosch Performance Line SX motor. With up to 55 Nm of torque it provides powerful assistance for technical climbs, yet remains compact and designed for a natural riding feel. The energy comes from a slim Bosch CompactTube battery with 400 Wh integrated into the down tube. The assistance can be controlled directly from the handlebar via the Bosch System Controller and the Bluetooth remote; further functions are available via the Bosch eBike Flow app.
The basis for the agile handling is the newly developed Series 4 aluminium frame with Marin's proven MultiTrac rear suspension and 140 mm of travel. Together with the Marzocchi Bomber Z1 fork with 150 mm of travel, this creates a balanced trail suspension setup that offers enough reserves for demanding descents without taking away the bike's playful character.
For the component spec, Marin relies on robust and proven parts. The Shimano CUES 10-speed drivetrain with a widely stepped 11–48 tooth cassette is designed for reliable shifting and high durability. The necessary control on fast and steep descents comes from TRP Slate EVO four-piston brakes with large 203 mm rotors front and rear.
The 29-inch wheels are fitted with tubeless-compatible Marin aluminium rims with a 32 mm inner width. Up front, a Maxxis Minion DHF in 29 x 2.5" provides plenty of grip and control, while a faster-rolling Maxxis Forekaster in 29 x 2.4" is used at the rear. Both tyres are tubeless ready and feature a robust EXO+ casing.
A standard TranzX dropper post with up to 200 mm of travel depending on size creates additional freedom of movement on technical trails. With a short 35-mm stem, a 780 mm wide handlebar and a modern trail geometry with a 65° head angle, the Rift Zone EL1 is consistently tuned for control, agility and off-road fun.
The model name "Rift Zone EL 1" is made up of three building blocks. "Rift Zone" is the name of the trail full suspension series and borrows a term from geology: a rift or graben zone arises where tectonic plates drift apart. Transferred to the bike world, it stands for the zone where riding fun begins – for the bikes nicknamed "Rifty", it is Marin's celebration of the joy of singletrack. The abbreviation "EL" stands for "Electric Light" and marks the particularly light e-bike variants within the series: they combine the trail geometry of the Rift Zone with a compact Bosch Performance Line SX drive. The numeral "1" finally marks the base level of the EL family – it is the most entry-friendly model ahead of the EL 2 and the top-specced EL XR.
Within the electric Rift Zone line, the EL 1 occupies the entry position: instead of the Fox suspension of the higher models, a Marzocchi Bomber Z1 fork with 150 mm soaks up bumps here, instead of the Shimano Deore 12-speed or wireless SRAM GX AXS drivetrain, the cheaper yet extremely robust Shimano CUES 10-speed components do the shifting, and instead of the Magura stoppers, TRP Slate Evo four-pistons on 203 mm rotors come into play. Compared with the pure muscle-powered Rift Zones (1, 2, XR), the EL 1 is above all one thing: an e-bike. The Bosch drive and the integrated battery make it considerably heavier, but at the same time far easier to conquer long climb sections – the sole wheel size here is consistently 29-inch.
The intended use of the Rift Zone EL 1 is clearly defined: a trail e-MTB for everyone who wants to enjoy the riding dynamics of a light full suspension bike, but also wants to master longer climbs and full days in the saddle without running out of reserves. The "Light" philosophy ensures that the bike feels playful and natural – the motor assistance merges into the trail action instead of dominating it. In contrast to the powerful Alpine Trail e-MTB with a Bosch Performance Line CX, the EL 1 therefore remains an agile, lightweight tool for singletracks and extended tours that only carries as much electronics as is actually needed – and in contrast to the muscle-powered Rift Zones, it does noticeably ease the climbing.
