Enable Youtube videosThe Marin Rift Zone 2 is the powerful mid-range all-rounder of the Rift Zone series and packs noticeably more performance into its package than the cheaper number one – without blowing the budget. It is built around a sturdy Series 3 frame made of 6061 aluminium with the proven MultiTrac rear suspension platform, which soaks up 130 mm of travel here. A real highlight is the Marzocchi suspension: up front, a high-quality Marzocchi Bomber Z2 fork with 140 mm of travel and sweep adjustment steers the bike, while a specifically tuned Marzocchi Bomber Air shock with custom tune handles the damping at the rear. The Rift Zone 2 is driven by a mechanical Shimano Deore 1x drivetrain with twelve gears – the 10-51 tooth cassette provides the wide gear range you rarely want to miss on the trail, both uphill and downhill. Braking is handled by powerful hydraulic Tektro M5140 four-piston disc brakes, accessing a 200 mm rotor up front and 180 mm at the rear. The standard TranzX dropper post with adjustable travel (150–200 mm depending on frame size) and the tubeless-compatible rim and tyre combination of a Maxxis Assegai up front and Minion DHR II at the rear (2.5 inches each) round off the specification.
The model name divides into two building blocks of meaning. "Rift Zone" is the series title and picks up a geological term: a rift or graben zone in which tectonic plates drift apart. Symbolically, the name stands for the zone in which riding fun arises – the "Rifty" is Marin's celebration of the joy of trail riding. The numeral "2" marks the second expansion stage within the family: it places the model between the budget-conscious entry bike (Rift Zone 1) and the fully equipped top models (XR and XR AXS). So the number stands for the middle position in the range, meaning more kit than the number one but less investment than the XR variants.
Compared with the Rift Zone 1, the Rift Zone 2 closes the biggest specification gaps: instead of the X-Fusion Sweep fork, a Marzocchi Bomber Z2 cartridge fork sits up front, and instead of the Microshift group, Shimano Deore components (12 speeds) handle the gear changes. On top of that come more powerful Tektro M5140 four-piston brakes and higher-grade Maxxis Assegai and Minion DHR II tyres – a clear step beyond the number one. In contrast to the XR top models, however, the number two allows itself to do without: no RockShox Lyrik suspension, no wireless AXS drivetrain and no Code Bronze stoppers, but a simple, high-value build that puts price and performance in a healthy relationship. Unsurprisingly, like all non-E models of the series, the Rift Zone 2 has no motor – it remains a classic, light muscle-powered full suspension bike.
The Marin Rift Zone 2 is the perfect companion for everyone who wants to take the step from a beginner's bike to a serious trail all-rounder. The combination of a moderate trail geometry, a 140 mm fork up front and a grippy Maxxis setup makes it a strong choice for everything between long all-mountain classics, technical singletracks and slower-paced – but action-packed – trail centre laps. It is therefore aimed at riders who have already made the first step and now want more comfort, more control and more stability without switching straight into the premium class of the XR models.
Marin matches the wheel size of the Rift Zone to the respective frame size. Smaller bikes are available with 27.5-inch wheels. The smaller wheels ensure particularly light, direct and agile handling and therefore suit smaller riders and a playful riding style extremely well.
The larger frame sizes, on the other hand, rely on 29-inch wheels. They roll more easily over roots and rocks, offer more stability and provide additional confidence especially at higher speeds. In size M, the Rift Zone 2 is available with both 27.5 and 29 inches. So you can choose yourself whether you prefer an especially nimble and playful bike or more stability and better bump rollover.
