Enable Youtube videosThe Marin Rift Zone 1 is the gateway into the much-praised Rift Zone range – and proof that a modern trail full suspension bike does not have to be expensive. The foundation is a sturdy Series 3 frame made of 6061 aluminium with the proven MultiTrac rear suspension, which here works in its long-travel variant with 140 mm of travel. Up front, an X-Fusion Sweep air fork with 150 mm of travel and compression and rebound adjustment takes care of the damping. Shifting is handled by a mechanical 1x drivetrain from Microshift (Advent MX series) with eleven gears – the cassette spans 11 to 50 teeth and, together with the 30-tooth chainring, delivers an impressive range from steep climbs to flowy descents. Stopping power comes from hydraulic Tektro M3120 disc brakes with 180 mm rotors front and rear. No lighting is fitted from the factory: the Rift Zone 1 is a pure muscle-powered bike with no motor, dynamo or light system. If you want to go bikepacking, you can rely on the classic mounting options and the wide, tubeless-compatible 2.4-inch tyres – but as a purist trail machine, the focus is clearly on riding fun rather than touring equipment. A practical bonus of the standard specification is the dropper seat post from X-Fusion Manic with a handlebar remote and 125 mm of travel, a feature you would otherwise expect mainly in higher price brackets.
The model name is made up of two parts. "Rift Zone" is the name of the entire series and refers to a geological term: a rift or crack zone that lies between two tectonic plates. Transferred to the bike, the name stands for the zone in which riding fun happens – Marin's "Made For Fun" motto is basically embedded in the name already. The "1" at the end marks the model's entry position within the series: it is the cheapest and simplest introduction to the Rift Zone world, while the higher numbers (Rift Zone 2) and the XR / XR AXS models step by step bring better components and higher prices. So the number explains where the journey through the big Rift Zone portfolio begins.
Compared with the next model up, the Rift Zone 2, the number one model deliberately accepts compromises on the specification level: instead of a Marzocchi fork, an X-Fusion Sweep does the work here, instead of the Shimano Deore drivetrain the mechanical Microshift Advent MX group shifts with eleven instead of twelve gears, and instead of the grippy premium Maxxis tyres the Rift Zone 1 rolls on noticeably more budget-friendly Delium Rugged tyres. This makes it the value-oriented base of the series, while the flagship XR and XR AXS models come with a RockShox suspension setup, more powerful brakes and higher-grade components to satisfy the demands of more ambitious rider profiles. Unlike the E-variants of the family (Rift Zone EL), the Rift Zone 1 also does without any electric drive – it stays a light, uncomplicated full suspension bike entirely without motor and battery.
The Marin Rift Zone 1 is trimmed for one purpose: it is meant to give newcomers and budget-conscious riders access to modern trail and full suspension riding without sacrificing frame and suspension quality. The combination of a slack trail geometry, generous travel and a ready-to-ride trail specification (dropper post, hydraulic brakes, tubeless-compatible tyres) makes it the perfect base for first technical rides, flow trails and growing ambitions. While the XR models of the series are designed for aggressive riding and performance-oriented trail enthusiasts and the E-versions score primarily with motor assistance, the Rift Zone 1 positions itself as a versatile, honest all-rounder for everyone who simply wants to start out on a proper full suspension bike – without blowing the budget.
The Marin Rift Zone 1 is the gateway into the popular Rift Zone model range and already offers everything a modern trail full suspension bike needs. Instead of a pared-down base specification, you get a fully-fledged mountain bike with a capable suspension, hydraulic disc brakes and a dropper seat post. This makes the Rift Zone 1 a particularly interesting choice for everyone who wants to get into trail and full suspension riding at an attractive price.
Marin combines the Rift Zone's different wheel sizes with the respective frame sizes. Smaller bikes are offered with 27.5-inch wheels, which make the handling lighter, more manoeuvrable and more agile. The larger frame sizes, on the other hand, rely on 29-inch wheels, which roll over obstacles more easily and add extra stability at higher speeds.
One special feature is frame size M: here both 27.5 and 29 inches are available. Riders can thus decide for themselves which character their Rift Zone should have – particularly agile and playful with 27.5 inches, or more stable and confident over roots and rocks with 29 inches.
