The tex‑lock brand was founded by two bicycle and textile designers (Alexandra Baum and Suse Brand) from Leipzig because in 2014 they couldn't find anything on the market that was both secure, flexible, lightweight, and well-designed. Inspired by high-tech textile fibers, they developed a textile-based bicycle lock that combines these very characteristics and was launched in 2016. Since then, the team has been producing handcrafted, innovative locks and continually expanding its product lineup, with a focus on design, security, and sustainability "Made in Germany".
tex-lock was founded in 2014 by Alexandra Baum and Suse Brand in Leipzig. The two bicycle and textile designers searched in vain for a bike lock that was secure, flexible, lightweight and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. When they could not find a suitable product on the market they developed their own textile bike lock. The name tex-lock is composed of the words textile and lock and refers to the textile material on which the lock is based. The first product was launched in 2016. Since then the team has been producing handmade innovative locks in Germany and continuously expanding its range.
The very first product was a textile-based bike lock that works with high-strength textile fibres. Different variants of this basic principle were added over time. The EYELET lock was developed first, followed later by the ORBIT model with a different locking mechanism. The range is supplemented by the MATE lock extender, which allows several locks to be combined. Over the years tex-lock has expanded its offering to include different lengths and locking systems while consistently sticking to the textile core material.
tex-lock products are sold in specialist bike shops, design stores and online shops in Germany, Europe and increasingly internationally. The exact number of sales outlets is in the mid three-digit range. The focus is on stationary specialist retailers since the locks can be experienced haptically there. tex-lock is also present at trade fairs and in selected concept stores.
Among the locks on offer a choice can be made between different lengths and locking mechanisms. The EYELET model is available in three sizes (80, 120 and 160 centimetres) and uses a plug-in lock with a cylinder, while the ORBIT model works with a combination lock and is available in 100 and 120 centimetres. The MATE lock extender allows the length of an existing lock to be increased or two tex-lock locks to be connected to each other. All models are made from the same high-strength textile mesh and are handcrafted in Germany.
