What Camino, RS and AXS stand for

The name "Camino" is borrowed from Spanish and translates to "path" or "way" – a fitting reference for a gravel bike equally at home on tarmac and unpaved roads. The "RS" acronym stands for "Race", marking this variant as a competition-focused evolution within the Camino family. The "AXS" suffix refers to SRAM's wireless electronic shifting platform fitted to this specification – the entry-level RS model utilises the SRAM Apex AXS XPLR 1x12 groupset. Consequently, the model name combines the series designation (Camino), the intended use case (RS for racing), and the technology identifier (AXS for SRAM wireless shifting).

The Camino series

Within the Camino series, the RS AXS differs fundamentally from other variants. The standard Camino (without RS) is conceived as a versatile all-rounder with a relaxed geometry, mounting points for racks and mudguards, and a more upright riding position – ideal for bikepacking, commuting, and extended tours. The Camino RS AXS, by contrast, features an entirely new race geometry with an aerodynamically optimised carbon frame that borrows design cues from the Stevens Arcalis aero road bike and the Xenith endurance model. It omits rack and mudguard mounts in favour of lower weight and higher stiffness. Compared to the Camino RS Pro AXS (SRAM Force XPLR 1x13, Zipp wheels) and the Camino RS Pro Di2 (Shimano GRX Di2 2x12), the RS AXS serves as the entry-level variant with SRAM Apex AXS and DT Swiss G 1800 wheels, yet retains the identical carbon frame with 45 mm tyre clearance.

More for gravel racing than for everyday use

The intended purpose of the Camino RS AXS is squarely in gravel racing and fast mixed-terrain riding. With its lightweight carbon frame (8.6 kg), aggressive race geometry, and aerodynamically shaped tubes, it is tuned for speed and efficiency – aimed at riders who want to compete at the front of gravel events or maximise their training pace. The 40 mm Schwalbe G-One R Pro tyres, offering low rolling resistance on tarmac and solid traction on gravel, underscore its racing character. In contrast to the standard Camino, which prioritises comfort and everyday usability, the RS AXS favours performance and weight savings – it is a pure sports machine with no concessions toward touring or commuting.
