Stevens Aviolo 5.2 HT – a touring bike with carbon belt drive, 8-speed hub gears and dynamo lighting

The frame in 6061 aluminium is built as an HT, which means the classic shape with a raised top tube – a silhouette that gives the bike a sporty appearance and at the same time provides the stability that counts on winding country roads. The geometry is tailored to travel and everyday routes: 142 mm O.L.D. ... rather 135 mm O.L.D., a 68 mm BSA bottom bracket, internal cable routing and postmount mounts for 160 mm rotors leave enough room without weighing the bike down unnecessarily. Two details are not a matter of course: adjustable dropouts, which allow the gear unit to be set exactly regardless of body size, and a screwed seatstay on the right, which makes it possible to readjust the saddle length even on the road. At 17.9 kg the bike stays easy to carry, and the frame sizes S to XXL cover a corresponding range of body heights. The colour Light Olive is a muted, warm green that suits this robust concept.

The drivetrain is the defining feature: A Gates Center Track Carbon Drive Belt transfers the power from the 50-tooth Gates S250 CDN chainring to the 24-tooth sprocket of the Shimano Nexus SG-C6001-8D, an 8-speed hub gear with freewheel and a gear range of 307 per cent. Such a belt requires no lubrication, no tensioning and no cleaning, is durable in return and silent in the dark – which is precisely what counts on tours after nightfall or over cobblestones. The freewheel does not jerk while pedalling, and the gears can be changed even while standing still, an advantage at every traffic light. The chain guard on the chainring keeps belt and clothing clean.

On the routes a bike like this covers, suspension decides how comfortable the ride feels: The SR Suntour NRX32-SP works with 63 mm of travel and a steel spring, which cannot be adjusted but operates reliably and requires no maintenance whatsoever. The Tektro HD-T280 hydraulic disc brakes at front and rear – two pistons each, operated via three-finger levers – work with 180 mm Tektro TR180-35 rotors in centre-lock design and brake reliably even in the rain. The wheels with Oxygen Taurus 26 rims in 26x622 ETRTO carry Continental Contact Urban tyres in 47-622, among the most comfortable tyres available for travel operation: the PureGrip compound rolls smoothly, and the Safety Pro layer keeps punctures away. The Shimano DH-3D37 hub dynamo with a 10x135 mm front axle and a QR9x100 mm rear axle is part of the standard equipment.

Visibility is provided by the B+M Briq-S T Senso+ LED headlight with 60 lux, supplied with power from the dynamo, and by the AXA Juno stand rear light. The Racktime STV RC 04 luggage rack with SNAP IT 2.0 and QL3.1 takes side panniers and pannier bags, making the bike suitable for multi-day tours and bikepacking; the Curana Apollo 60 mudguards ensure that in wet weather not the entire route runs down past the bike. The Scorpo Rise handlebar with 700 mm width, 9° backsweep and 25 mm rise, the Oxygen stem at 17°, the Selle Royal Vivo Ergo saddle and the Scorpo seatpost with 17 mm offset result in an upright, relaxed seating position in which even a long day can be ridden out well. Shimano Nexus SL-C6001-8 gear lever, ATB Alu Reflex pedals, the STEVENS Edge kickstand with KSA 40 mount, the D85 bell and the total weight limit of 140 kg round off the equipment; child seats are approved, and trailers up to 80 kg with a trailer brake are permitted.

Aviolo 5.2 HT: five name components and what they mean

“Aviolo" designates the model series of the STEVENS travel and touring bikes, whose shared features include a lightweight aluminium frame, a suspension fork, hub dynamo lighting, a luggage rack and mudguards. Within the series, the 5 stands for the entry level: the 5.2 sits below the 6.1, 7.1, 8.1 and 9.1. The digit after the point distinguishes the drivetrain and equipment concept – in the current model year the 1 models ride with a chain drivetrain, while behind the 5.2 sits a concept of Gates belt and Shimano hub gear. “HT" means High Tube and stands for the diamond frame with a raised top tube, which exists alongside the LT trapeze frame and the Forma frame. Light Olive is the colour designation, a muted olive green.

Belt, hub, steel spring: what separates the 5.2 from the 1 models

The biggest difference to the other Aviolo models lies in the drivetrain: the 1 models rely on the Shimano CUES chain drivetrain – 18 gears on the 6.1, 20 on the 7.1, and 22 on both the 8.1 and the 9.1 – while the 5.2 rides with Gates Center Track Carbon Drive Belt and the Shimano Nexus SG-C6001-8D on eight gears, a freewheel and 307 per cent gear range. Added to this are the steel spring with 63 mm of travel instead of the air suspension of the other models and lighting with 60 instead of 80 lux. Compared with its own frame variants, the HT differs from the LT with 700 mm instead of 680 mm handlebar width and the sizes S to XXL as against XS to L; frame material, drivetrain, brakes and wheels are the same in all three. The result is a bike with a different number of gears, but with a belt that needs neither lubrication nor tensioning and makes no sound in the dark.

Where the Aviolo 5.2 HT is particularly at home in town and in your free time

The purpose of this bike lies wherever a bike should demand little attention and still ride reliably: on the way to work, in town, on longer loops through parks and forests, and on multi-day tours with luggage. That is precisely where the combination of belt, hub freewheel and steel spring comes into its own – the suspension works unchanged after thousands of kilometres, the 47 Continental Contact tyres roll quietly over asphalt, and the hub dynamo lighting keeps light on the road even after weeks without charging. With belt drive, luggage rack, mudguards, stand rear light and 60 lux, the bike is fully equipped for daily use. For tours with very long climbs, large amounts of luggage or a desire for the finest shifting precision, the 22 gears of the 8.1 and 9.1 models are the broader choice – here it is the quietness, the low maintenance and the consistent function over kilometres that decide.
