Schindelhauer Heinrich SSP Active Line Plus: light singlespeed e-bike with carbon belt drive and 50 Nm

The Heinrich SSP Active Line Plus reduces a bicycle to a single idea: everyday practicality without any mechanics that would require maintenance. The AL6061-T6 aluminium frame combines a triple-butted tube set with a forged motor bridge, a multi-cell down tube and a forged dropout that is secured by a slide tensioning system and takes a specially developed belt port for the drive. An integrated saddle clamp and smoothed welds keep the appearance calm, and a five-year warranty comes as standard. This complex frame development is designed to enclose motor and battery as compactly and elegantly as possible, without compromising functionality or stability – and it gives a mid-drive bike the sporty cornering behaviour you would otherwise only expect from a race bike. Fork, head tube and frame route all cables internally, so only the purist shape remains on the outside.

The Bosch Active Line Plus provides the drive with 250 watts nominal power and 50 Nm of torque, supporting up to 25 km/h. Energy comes from the removable Bosch PowerTube 500 with around 500 Wh of capacity, which is fully charged in roughly four and a half hours – plugged in in the evening, ready to go in the morning. Depending on the assistance level selected, that capacity easily covers several commutes, shopping trips or a relaxed excursion into the countryside. Because the motor operates without a gearbox, there is neither shifting noise nor wear on any shifting components, and the bike also stays pleasingly free-rolling above the support limit and with the motor switched off.

Power is transmitted by a single Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt with 55 teeth at the front, 20 at the rear and 120 teeth in total. This fixed ratio works without oil, without stretch and without re-tensioning, and has been proven over many years. The fact that a chain drivetrain would offer several ratios that can be finely dialled in on a climb is not a weakness here but a deliberate decision: the frame geometry, the short wheelbase and the nimble 27.5-inch wheels running 47 mm tyres make the bike agile on their own, while the motor's torque effortlessly compensates for every traffic light, every headwind and every steep cobbled climb. One additional benefit of the fixed design: nothing catches when you pull away on a hill, and there is nothing that can jam or get dirty.

The complete lighting system disappears into the cockpit and the seatpost. At the front, the Supernova Mini 2 headlight is integrated into the handlebar so that it is only noticeable in the dark; at the rear, the LightSKIN LED seatpost with an integrated tail light takes over, likewise powered directly from the e-bike battery. That keeps the bike on the legally compliant side in any darkness without having to buy accessories, and the seatpost looks like a completely ordinary component.

At 19.7 kg in size M, this bike belongs to the lightest fully equipped e-bikes in its class – around four kilograms lighter than a typical urban pedelec with rack and mudguards. That is exactly why it rides like a lightweight city bike and can be carried into a bus, train or cellar. It is prepared for everyday use: mudguards can be fitted, the frame geometry provides mounting points for a front luggage rack, a lock holder can be attached beneath the top tube and a frame lock can also be mounted. A child seat can be attached to the seat tube. The Hebie 663 FIX18 side stand is part of the standard equipment. In its delivered state, therefore, the bike presents itself deliberately reduced – without accessories, but without any compromise in lighting technology.

Equipment in detail: Formula CURA hydraulic disc brakes with 160 mm rotors, 47 mm wide WTB Horizon tyres with reflective stripes on Alexrims EXR25 rims with Sapim Race spokes, Schindelhauer high-flange DISC hubs, the Miranda Delta crankset, CNC-machined Schindelhauer Urban Pedal in aluminium, Satori Stealth stem, Satori Noirette handlebar, FABRIC Scoop Shallow Sport saddle, screw-on Schindelhauer grips and a hydroformed aluminium fork with internal cable routing, tapered headset and 15 mm thru-axle.

The four components of the name SSP Active Line Plus

The model name is not a pure marketing term but a concatenation of technical statements.

Heinrich – the name under which all variants of the series answer. The brand relies on first names that unmistakably sound German and organises them by a principle that becomes visible directly in the frame: male names stand for the diamond frame, female names for the step-through frame. Heinrich therefore carries the closed top tube; the female counterpart Hannah is technically identical and relies on a swan-neck trapezoid with a low step-through.

SSP – the abbreviation for SingleSpeed. It marks the reduced version of a model family: fixed belt, fixed ratio, no gears. Alongside it, the enviolo version with a stepless hub and the Alfine version with an eight-speed hub gear exist in the same family – the name suffix therefore always indicates which drive carries the basic construction.

Active Line Plus – the Bosch class of this bike. It describes a motor with 50 Nm of torque that runs quietly, efficiently and unobtrusively and thus forms the entry level among Bosch mid-drives: below the Performance Line with 65 Nm and the CX tier with 85 Nm. This classification is also the reason why the SSP here is the most accessible of the three singlespeed variants – on an identical frame, an identical belt and at identical weight.

graphitschwarz – the colour variant. A deep, matt black that, together with dark rims, dark add-on parts and dark tyres, forms an evenly calm surface. Perlblau, titansilber and granatrot are also available in the same model family.

The three singlespeed versions in direct comparison

Because frame, fork, Gates belt, wheels and weight are identical across all SSP versions, the motor tier is the decisive distinguishing feature. That is precisely where this bike positions itself.

The SSP Active Line Plus presented here works with 50 Nm and is the balanced, economical variant of the range. It is aimed at everyone who rides within the city and on well-built roads and wants a light, low-maintenance bike without much fuss. The Performance Line version with 65 Nm is available on the same basis and delivers noticeably more reserve in headwind, steep climbs and longer stages, without weight increasing to match – both weigh 19.7 kg in size M. The SSP Bosch Smart version with Bosch Performance CX and 85 Nm sits at the very top with a Kiox display, LED remote, eBike Flow app and ConnectModule preparation, and is aimed at riders who additionally want digital connectivity. Compared with the geared siblings of the same series – Heinrich Alfine with an eight-speed hub and Active Line Plus, Heinrich enviolo with the stepless Enviolo TR and eShift – the SSP is the most technically reduced choice: no shifting mechanism, no gear combination, but around four kilograms less weight and a clean, understated appearance.

What this bike is made for – and what it is not

This model is an all-round pedelec for the city and its surroundings. At 19.7 kg it remains light enough to carry and to stow away, yet stable enough to also take a gravel track, a forest path or the one steep side street. The 47-millimetre tyres on 27.5-inch wheels absorb unevenness well, as it occurs in the city on a daily basis, and the hydraulic disc brakes deliver predictable deceleration in the rain. The PowerTube 500 battery makes the bike a genuine everyday companion for commutes, shopping trips and excursions into the countryside, and the fully integrated lighting system means there is nothing to retrofit at all.

Within the family, this bike occupies a clearly delimited role: it is the reduced city bike for all days on which a luggage rack, mudguards and full equipment are irrelevant. Anyone who covers longer distances, hilly cities or changing gradients daily is better served by the stronger Performance Line version, because the additional torque acts exactly where a gear combination would otherwise be needed. Anyone who deliberately plans for luggage, wet weather and multiple users should choose the Alfine version, because mudguards, a frame-fixed luggage rack and pannier rails are part of the factory equipment there.

It is also worth drawing a line to the manufacturer's other series: the Arthur and Antonia models are set up in a more sporty-upright way, the Emil is designed to be more urban and nimble, and the Wilhelm family is built as a custom and gravel bike with Pinion, Rohloff or Alfine Di2 technology for entirely different purposes. Gender-specific alternatives and frame shapes remain worth mentioning: Hannah is the female counterpart to Heinrich and technically identical, but relies on the swan-neck trapezoid frame with a low step-through. The Heinrich is offered here exclusively as a diamond frame – in this article in size L (53 cm); further frame sizes are carried by the series as separate variants.
