Schindelhauer Heinrich Enviolo Bosch Smart titansilber: stepless e-bike with leather, 85 Nm and app

Titansilber and leather – this combination is why this colour variant has an effect of its own. The matt silver tone of the frame forms a bright, matter-of-fact base, and the two leather parts – a Brooks B17 saddle and Schindelhauer Ergo leather grips – place a warm brown accent on it. The result does not look like an e-bike but like a bicycle that happens to be equipped with a motor. The manufacturer's description calls the design classic and timeless, and here that is accurate.

Technically, the fullest configuration the Heinrich series has to offer sits in this frame. The enviolo TR is a stepless hub gear that operates without cables and without any lever; in AUTOMATiQ mode with electronic eShift it tracks the ratio by itself, so the pedalling frequency stays constant. You set it once and keep pedalling. Power comes from the Bosch Smart System: Performance CX with 250 watts nominal output and 85 Nm of torque, supporting up to 25 km/h. Both systems work together, as the description puts it, and adjust individually to rider and riding style – preferred cadence and desired assistance level are all it takes.

The digital layer sits on top. Via the eBike Flow app, the smartphone connects to the Smart System, riding dynamics can be adapted, personal profiles created and over-the-air updates installed. The Bosch ConnectModule can optionally be added and protects the bike against theft via GPS tracking. Display and operation are handled by the Bosch KIOX onboard computer together with an LED remote. The PowerTube 500 with around 500 Wh can be removed at any time, which on a bike with luggage rack and lighting is simply part of everyday life.

The frame technology is that of the series: AL6061-T6 aluminium, a triple-butted tube set, a forged motor bridge, a multi-cell down tube, a forged dropout with slide tensioning system and Belt Port, an integrated saddle clamp, smoothed welds. This complex in-house development encloses motor and battery as compactly as possible without losing functionality or stability, and ensures sporty cornering on a mid-drive bike. The fork is hydroformed aluminium with a tapered profile, internal cable routing, post-mount brake mount and 15 mm thru-axle; the headset is an integrated Acros ICR 1.5".

The luggage rack is not merely provided for but fitted: a RackTime rear rack with SnapIt quick-release that allows panniers to be removed and attached without tools. A front rack can also be fitted. Weather protection is provided by Alumee mudguards 60 mm wide in Schindelhauer specification, which keep rain and dirt away. Lighting consists of the Supernova Mini 2 headlight and a Supernova E3 tail light, both powered from the e-bike battery. A lock holder can be attached beneath the top tube and a frame lock can also be mounted; the seat tube provides for a child seat, and for the rear wheel axle a child trailer can be hitched via a coupling adapter. The Hebie 663 FIX18 side stand is part of the equipment; the permissible total weight of bike, rider and luggage is 155 kg.

It is ridden via a Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt with 50 teeth at the front, 22 at the rear and 118 teeth in total. The Schwalbe G-One Speed tyres in 50-584 are 50 millimetres wide, carry reflective stripes and run on 27.5-inch Alexrims EXR25 rims with eyelets and Sapim Race spokes in three- and two-fold lacing. The hubs are Schindelhauer high-flange Disc at the front and enviolo TR at the rear, the brakes are Shimano Alfine S7000 hydraulic disc brakes with 160 mm rotors. Added to this are the Miranda Delta crankset, CNC-machined Schindelhauer Urban Pedal in aluminium, the Satori Stealth stem and the Satori Seagull handlebar.

At 24.9 kg in size M it is the heaviest bike of the Heinrich family. That weight results from the equipment: mudguards, rear rack, enviolo hub, S7000 hydraulics, 50-millimetre tyres and the complete lighting system weigh more than the shifting mechanics an SSP saves. Anyone who accepts full equipment, leather and the brand's strongest motor tier in return does not have to retrofit anything.

What the four name components mean

Heinrich – the name of the series. The brand uses first names that sound Old High German and organises them by a system with a direct technical consequence: male names stand for the diamond frame, female names for the step-through frame. Heinrich is therefore the closed version; the female counterpart Hannah carries the same technology with a swan neck and a low step-through.

Enviolo – the name of the manufacturer of the stepless hub gear after which the bike is named. enviolo hubs know no individual gears but continuously specify the ratio between pedal and wheel rotation. AUTOMATiQ with electronic eShift adds an automatic function that takes over this adjustment itself. Alongside it, the Alfine version with eight fixed gears and the SSP version with a fixed ratio exist in the same series – three gear concepts on an identical basic construction.

Bosch Smart – the marking of the digital generation. It means that motor, battery, display and controls work as a networked system: Kiox onboard computer, LED remote, smartphone connection via the eBike Flow app, over-the-air updates and ConnectModule preparation for GPS theft protection. In this constellation the most powerful motor model is installed as well, the Performance CX with 85 Nm.

Titansilber – the colour variant. A matt silver which, together with black rims, dark tyres and the brown leather of the saddle, forms a matter-of-fact yet warm contrast and highlights the lines of the frame. Graphitschwarz, mitternachtsblau, perlblau and granatrot are also available in the Heinrich family.

How this version compares with the other Enviolo versions

Frame, fork, Gates CDX belt, wheels, hubs, crankset, pedals, stem, handlebar, seatpost, mudguards, luggage rack, lighting and side stand are essentially the same across the enviolo versions. What differs is the motor tier and the equipment details.

This variant has 85 Nm and thus the top motor tier within the enviolo range, where the Performance Line version runs at 65 Nm. Compared with the Alfine version with eight-speed hub gear, Shimano Alfine hydraulics and Active Line Plus at 50 Nm, it relies on full automatic, full torque and digital networking. Compared with the SSP Bosch Smart, which brings the same 85 Nm motor but runs with a fixed ratio, without luggage rack and at 19.7 kg, it is the complete expression with comfort and equipment components. Compared with the simpler enviolo version with Formula MT401 brakes, it sits one level higher with the Shimano Alfine S7000 hydraulic brakes and the 50-millimetre G-One tyres.

The choice can therefore be summarised in three questions: gear technology, equipment and digitalisation. Maximum equipment with leather is found here. Maximum simplicity and minimal weight in the SSP Bosch Smart. Gears and all-round equipment without the Smart System in the Alfine. Anyone who takes all three routes ends up with this bike.

Which rides and which riders this bike is for

This bike is for everyone who does not just want to use a bicycle but also to adjust it. You choose cadence and assistance level, and the hub handles the rest. Traffic light starts, headwind and every gradient therefore run evenly, and the constant pedalling frequency distributes the strain so that even long stages can be managed in a calm rhythm. The 50-millimetre tyre absorbs unevenness, the raised handlebar position of the Satori Seagull and the Brooks B17 ensure a relaxed seating posture, and the hydraulic disc brakes deliver predictable deceleration in the wet.

The full equipment considerably widens the range of uses: the fitted rear rack takes shopping, bags and luggage, the mudguards keep rain away, and the continuous lighting system makes the bike ready for use in the evening and in bad weather. That makes it equally suitable for commuters, weekend excursions and longer tours into the surrounding area.

Within the series the position is clear: this is the most comprehensive and most technically developed version. Compared with the SSP at 19.7 kg it is the more comfortable and better equipped bike, and the price is a weight that is accepted because the equipment is worth it. Against the other series the delimitation is as usual: Arthur and Antonia are more sporty-upright, the Emil more urban and nimble, and the Wilhelm family is built as a custom and gravel bike with Pinion, Rohloff or Alfine Di2 technology for other purposes. Among the gender-specific variants and frame shapes, Hannah is the female counterpart to Heinrich, technically identical but with a swan-neck trapezoid frame and a low step-through. Here the Heinrich is offered exclusively as a diamond frame in size M (48 cm); this colour variant is currently available in exactly this size, while further frame sizes are obtainable in the other colours of the series.
