The Arthur IX X35 e-bike combines the Mahle X35 system with a Pinion C-Line gear unit with 6 gears. Once tempered, this aluminium becomes exceptionally strong while staying light, and the aerodynamically flattened tube profiles reduce wind resistance. A forged bottom bracket shell and forged dropouts take the points of highest load, the sliding dropout system allows belt tension to be set precisely, and the belt port opens the frame for servicing. Cables routed inside, an integrated seat clamp and smoothed welds make the bike look tidy while sheltering electrical components from moisture. At the front, a hydroformed tapered aluminium fork with internal cable routing, post mount brake mount and 15 mm through-axle is guided by an Acros ICR headset.
Nine gears make this the widest-shifting edition of its range. The Pinion C-Line gear unit, developed by former Porsche engineers and mounted in the bottom bracket, works in the XR version with an extended ratio spread; Pinion supplies a matching inner bearing and crankset. Because the gear unit sits in the bottom bracket and is sealed against dirt, gear jumps can be performed precisely even from a standstill – at traffic lights as much as mid-flow. A Gates Carbon Drive CDX transmits the power, with 39 teeth at the front and 34 or 28 at the rear on a belt of 118T or 115T. The result: a drivetrain that pulls evenly in the rain, does not weigh down the already light frame and can be matched step by step to changing route profiles. CNC-machined aluminium urban pedals complete the crank side.
Electric thrust comes from the Mahle ebikemotion Hub Drive M1, which sits in the rear hub, acts directly on the wheel and delivers 250 W with 40 Nm up to 25 km/h. The Intube battery of around 250 Wh is built into the down tube and is controlled via the iWoc ONE with Bluetooth and ANT+; assistance levels and individual riding profiles are set with a button on the frame or via the app. Combined with the Pinion gearing, this creates a drivetrain that distributes e-motor torque and human pedal power in an evenly metered way – an advantage that becomes noticeable on long climbs and during shifts under load.
The equipment completes the picture: a high-flange front hub with disc mount, eyeleted Alexrims CXD26 rims and Sapim Race spokes laced 3-cross and 1-cross give the wheel stiffness and long service life, while the Shimano Alfine hydraulic disc brakes with 160 mm rotors provide predictable deceleration in any weather. Continental GP Urban Classic tyres in 35-622 roll quietly over asphalt, the chromed Brooks B17 sits comfortably, and Schindelhauer ergo leather grips plus the Satori Stealth aluminium stem complete the cockpit. For everyday use, Curana CLite mudguards are fitted as standard, and mounts for a rear rack, kickstand, bottle cage and lock are provided. In cream white the overall impression is deliberately restrained: a bright, classic paint finish with all the technology hidden underneath. Weight is 15.7 or 15.9 kg in size M, with a system weight of 130 kg.
This urban series consistently uses first names, because a proper name expresses the attitude of a bike. ARTHUR stands for the range, guided in-house as the avant-gardist – electrically assisted, yet visually a classic bicycle. “IX” is a Roman numeral giving the number of gears, which here reaches nine; the six-gear edition carries the tag “VI”. “X35” designates the drive generation from manufacturer Mahle, namely the Hub Drive M1 combined with the Intube battery. The colour cream white is listed separately in dealer naming and forms part of the configuration rather than the technical designation. Four axes structure the range: gear count, drive generation, tyre setup and colour. Compared with the VI edition with six gears, the IX variant offers finer tuning, which pays off on longer climbs, over cobblestones and in headwinds – with an identical frame, identical belt and identical lighting system. Compared with the singlespeed editions, the Pinion gear hub with inner bearing and crankset is added, whereas the crank is supplied by a Shimano Alfine Hollowtech II with press-fit bottom bracket in the single-gear models. Compared with the X20 versions, the drive generation remains the earlier X35 with 40 Nm and iWoc control; the successor generation adds more torque, selectable assistance levels and a control unit in the top tube. The ARTHUR Cruiser occupies a niche of its own with 47er tyres on 27.5-inch rims, riser handlebar and Pelago front basket, whereas this configuration presents 35 mm tyres on 28 inches and a sporty-comfort seat position. In colour, the IX X35 is offered in cream white and midnight blue, with garnet red and graphite black reserved for the other range variants.
This equipment is aimed at everyone who moves through the city every day and values agility: the ride to the office, the shopping trip, a lap through the park. Precisely where gradients, pace and stops keep changing, nine gears pay off, because the feel of pedalling is retained despite motor assistance and every incline is met cleanly. Set against the Emil and Emilia family, which enters with an upright, comfort-focused character, Arthur remains sportier and more direct; set against a purely human-powered bike, the rear hub motor is added, acting on the wheel without noticeable resistance. Standard mudguards and the rack mount additionally make the bike suitable for shopping and short trips into the surrounding countryside.
A female counterpart exists as well: ANTONIA combines the same VI and IX pairings of Pinion gear unit and Mahle drive, yet is built as a step-through with a lowered top tube and an additional XS frame. Anyone preferring an upright riding position therefore chooses between two frame silhouettes – the diamond frame of this bike for a sporty-classic seat and the lowered entry for a relaxed, upright posture – with identical technology in either case.
