Schindelhauer Antonia IX X35 colour issue – urban e-bike in cream white, size M, with nine Pinion gears

This example carries the colour deviation stated in its name: between frame and fork the two white tones are not exactly identical. The manufacturer expressly classifies this deviation as no ground for complaint and delivers the bike in size M with 56 cm frame length, suitable for a body height of about 175 to 185 cm; it is available from stock immediately. A practical note: with the LightSKIN seatpost the minimum saddle height is 73 cm, measured from the bottom bracket centre to the saddle surface.

The shape behind it is completely timeless: the material is heat-treated AL6061-T6 aluminium, triple-butted in the Aero-Shape tube set – strong at the welds, slim in the tube centre and stiff in between. A forged bottom bracket shell, forged dropouts with slider tensioning system and belt port, integrated seat clamp, smoothed welds and internal cable routing keep the line calm and the technology invisible. A hydroformed aluminium fork with tapered steerer, internal cable routing, post mount mount and 15 mm through-axle completes the package.

Nine mechanical gears sit in the Pinion C-Line gear unit inside the bottom bracket, developed by former Porsche engineers. The nine steps spread the ratios finely across the entire range, so every gradient has a suitable gear ready and the pedal keeps running evenly. Shifting also works while standing still, which changes the gear at the traffic light within seconds. The XR specification is matched to higher loads and sportier riding, the closed construction inside the bottom bracket stays reliable in rain and dirt, and its low position lowers the centre of gravity.

Crank and rear wheel are linked by a Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt with 115 teeth as well as 39 teeth at the front and 28 teeth at the rear. Slider tensioning system and belt port keep the tension permanently adjustable. Around three to four times as many kilometres as with a chain are possible at the same efficiency, the belt runs whisper-quiet, and maintenance is limited to a few hand movements per year.

The MAHLE X35 system provides the assistance: a hub motor in the rear wheel with 250 watts of power and 40 Nm of torque drives the bike up to 25 km/h. The inTube battery with around 250 Wh disappears completely into the down tube, controlled via the iWOC ONE cockpit from the button on the top tube or through the app over Bluetooth and ANT+. Because the motor is feather-light and applies its force at the rear wheel only, the bike also rides calmly and naturally without assistance, the drivetrain stays free and the belt is protected.

The LightSKIN City system takes care of visibility: the handlebar houses the headlight, the seatpost the taillight – both compactly integrated into the components, StVZO-compliant and fed from the battery. They are therefore ready to go at any time, so while pedalling the e-bike forms a complete lighting system that works just as reliably in the city as at dusk.

Equipment for weather, comfort and control: Curana CLite mudguards keep off rain and dirt, the Satori Stealth stem and the Schindelhauer ergo leather grips provide calm rides, and the Brooks B17 S Lady saddle on a chromed rail sits softly and upright. Shimano Alfine hydraulic brakes with 160 mm discs brake strongly and with precise modulation, and the CNC-machined Schindelhauer Urban Pedals in aluminium belong to the drivetrain. Schindelhauer high-flange hubs with Alexrims CXD26 rims and Sapim Race spokes give the wheel high stiffness, while Continental GP Urban Classic tyres in 35-622 ensure calm running on asphalt and secure grip on cobbles. In size M the bike weighs 15.7 or 15.9 kg, and 130 kg total weight are approved.

Everything for everyday life and tours is prepared: a rear rack attachment takes luggage, and bottle cage mounts, lock mount and kickstand mounting are provided. With the wide city tyres, the belt drive and the integrated lighting, the result is a package that keeps running reliably and needs little care even after a full working day.

The name in detail: Antonia, IX, X35 and colour issue

This model designation consists of four building blocks, and none of them is the manufacturer name. “Antonia” is a classic first name, the female form of Antonius, and stands for the trapez-framed variant; the male counterpart with diamond frame is called “Arthur”. “IX” is a Roman numeral and at the same time the gear count for the nine gears of the Pinion C-Line gear unit. “X35” names the fitted motor system, the MAHLE HUB Drive X35 with 40 Nm of torque, while the X20 models deliver 55 Nm. “Colour issue” is not a technical feature but the marking of this example: it is a bike with a slight colour deviation between frame and fork, which the manufacturer expressly classifies as no ground for complaint. Cream white is the base colour, and the second paint of the series is called sage green.

Technically it fully matches the IX X35 – nine Pinion steps, MAHLE X35 with 40 Nm, Gates carbon belt, LightSKIN lighting, Curana CLite mudguards – and weighs 15.7 or 15.9 kg in size M. Compared with the VI X35 with six gears it offers the finer graduation, and compared with the models using the X20 system the other motor generation with 40 Nm. The 40 Nm of the X35 system engage reliably on gradients, and the nine Pinion steps additionally help with finding the right ratio precisely. Anyone who values an easy step-through more than the sporty look of a diamond frame chooses exactly the right frame shape with this Antonia – and with a frame size of 175 to 175 cm body height gets a bike that is available immediately.

Compared with singlespeed and Nexus models you opt for a multi-step drivetrain with Gates belt and Pinion gearbox, compared with the Bosch-driven bikes for an especially light, quiet system with hub motor.
