Enable Youtube videosThe EL XR crowns the electric Rift Zone line and steps it up in almost every discipline compared with the EL 1 and EL 2: instead of the Marzocchi Bomber Z1 fork or the Fox 36 Performance version, a Fox 36 Performance Elite steers the front here, and the Fox Float X Performance Elite shock is also the finest damper in the family. For the drivetrain, the top model relies on the completely wireless SRAM GX AXS T-Type transmission with an electronic shifter, which outshines the mechanical GX Eagle (EL 2) and Shimano CUES drivetrains (EL 1). Instead of TRP Slate Evo or Code Bronze brakes, a Magura MT7 four-piston system with HC3 levers and 203-mm MDR rotors does the braking, the crank is made of carbon, and the PNW Loam dropper post replaces the TranzX. What is shared among the three sister models – the Bosch Performance Line SX unit, the 400 Wh CompactTube battery and the Series 4 frame with the 140-mm MultiTrac rear – while the counterpart to the non-electric Rift Zone XR differs above all in drive and integrated battery.
The basis is Marin's light Series 4 aluminium frame with the proven MultiTrac rear suspension and 140 mm of travel. With a 65° head angle and a modern, trail-oriented geometry, the Rift Zone EL XR is designed for technical descents as well as fast, flowy trails.
In keeping with its top model claim, the suspension uses a particularly high-grade Fox Performance Elite combination. Up front, a Fox 36 Performance Elite works with 150 mm of travel, while at the rear a Fox Float X Performance Elite with EVOL air spring provides a controlled 140 mm of travel. The capable suspension offers plenty of reserves on fast and rough descents and can also be precisely tuned to the rider and area of use.
Another highlight is the wireless SRAM GX AXS T-Type transmission. The electronic drivetrain combines precise shifting with the high durability of the Transmission system specially developed for modern mountain bikes. The 10–52 tooth cassette offers a wide gear range for steep climbs and fast trail sections. The high-grade drivetrain is completed by an e*thirteen e*spec Plus carbon crank with a 34-tooth chainring and an e*thirteen chain guide.
With the brakes, Marin also relies on top-class components. The Magura MT7 four-piston brakes with HC3 brake levers and e-bike-specific pads offer high braking power and very good modulation. Large 203-mm MDR rotors front and rear ensure confident control even on long, steep and demanding descents.
The 29-inch wheels come with tubeless-compatible Marin aluminium rims with a 32 mm inner width. Up front, a Maxxis Minion DHF in 29 x 2.5" with MAXXGRIP provides maximum grip and control, while at the rear a Maxxis Forekaster in 29 x 2.4" with MAXX TERRA combines traction with good rolling characteristics. Both tyres come in the robust EXO+ version and are tubeless ready.
The top model claim is also evident in the details: a high-quality PNW Loam dropper post with 150 to 200 mm of travel depending on size creates plenty of freedom of movement on technical descents. A short 35-mm CNC stem and the wide Marin Trail cockpit complete the spec that is consistently tuned for demanding trail use.
The EL XR is designed for trail fans who no longer want to compromise on the e-bike question and at the same time expect the best possible equipment down to the last detail – from the finest Fox suspension through the clean wireless drivetrain to the powerful Magura brakes for fast and technical descents. The "Light" philosophy takes full priority: the bike remains as natural and handy as a normal mountain bike and only noticeably gains its assistance where long climbs begin. This role sets it apart both from the bulky full-power e-MTBs of the Alpine Trail E series with a Bosch Performance Line CX and from the pure muscle-powered Rift Zone models that do entirely without electrical assistance – the EL XR is thus the link for everyone who wants both: real trail performance and gentle uphill assistance.
