Enable Youtube videosThe Marin Rift Zone EL2 is a powerful high-spec light e-MTB for everyone who wants as few compromises as possible on demanding trails. The abbreviation EL stands for "Electric Light": Marin combines the proven trail characteristics of the Rift Zone family with a lighter and more compact e-bike system. The bike therefore remains agile, playful and close to the riding feel of a classic mountain bike, while offering the assistance of a modern e-drive on climbs.
The heart of the drive system is the light Bosch Performance Line SX motor with 55 Nm of torque. Its natural power delivery fits perfectly with the sporty character of the Rift Zone EL2. The energy comes from a slim Bosch CompactTube battery with 400 Wh integrated into the frame. If you need additional battery capacity, the system can be extended with the optionally available Bosch PowerMore range extender. The drive is controlled via the Bosch System Controller and the Bluetooth remote on the handlebar; the system can also be connected to the Bosch eBike Flow app.
The newly developed Series 4 aluminium frame offers 140 mm of travel with Marin's MultiTrac rear suspension and forms the basis for the agile trail handling. Up front, a Fox 36 Performance fork with 150 mm of travel does the work, while a Fox Float X Performance with an EVOL air spring is used at the rear. Compared with the EL1, the EL2 therefore offers a significantly higher-grade suspension setup with plenty of reserves for fast, rough and technically demanding descents.
The EL2 also makes a clear step upwards in the drivetrain. The SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain is combined with a widely stepped 10–52 tooth cassette and therefore offers enough bandwidth for steep climbs as well as fast trail sections. An e*thirteen e*spec Plus crank with a 34-tooth chainring and an e*thirteen chain guide complete the robust drivetrain.
Reliable deceleration comes from SRAM Code Bronze four-piston brakes. Large 200-mm HS2 rotors front and rear provide high braking power and control when things get serious on long or steep descents.
The Rift Zone EL2 rolls on 29-inch wheels with 32 mm wide, tubeless-compatible Marin aluminium rims. Up front, Marin relies on a Maxxis Minion DHF in 29 x 2.5" with a grippy MAXXGRIP rubber compound and EXO+ casing. At the rear, a Maxxis Forekaster in 29 x 2.4" with a MAXX TERRA compound and likewise robust EXO+ casing is used. The tyre setup thus combines plenty of grip at the front with good rolling characteristics at the rear.
A standard TranzX dropper post, a short 35-mm stem and the wide Marin Trail handlebar underline the consistent trail orientation. The result is a high-spec light e-MTB for riders who want the assistance of a Bosch drive, but place particular value on agile handling, a capable suspension setup and trail-oriented components.
The product name "Rift Zone EL 2" owes its existence to three different building blocks. The series title "Rift Zone" is a technical term from geology: a rift zone is a graben in which the earth's crust breaks apart – Marin transfers this image to the moment when riding fun begins on the trail and coined the nickname "Rifty" for it. The letter combination "EL", in turn, is the abbreviation for "Electric Light": within the family it marks the lightweight e-versions that combine the compact Bosch Performance Line SX drive with a slim battery in the down tube, instead of relying on bulky full-power systems. Finally, the numeral "2" names the middle maturity stage of the electric series – a model that is clearly better equipped than the EL 1, but leaves the finest components to the EL XR.
Within the Rift Zone EL line, the EL 2 takes the position of the middle model and thus clearly separates itself from the entry bike: while the EL 1 trusts the Marzocchi Bomber Z1 fork along with the Bomber Air shock, a higher-grade Fox 36 Performance fork with 150 mm of travel and a Fox Float X Performance shock with EVOL air spring – including a climb switch – soak up the bumps here over the 140-mm MultiTrac rear. The 10-speed Shimano CUES group gives way to a twelve-speed SRAM GX Eagle spec with a widely spreading 10–52 tooth cassette, and instead of the TRP Slate Evo brakes, SRAM Code Bronze four-pistons on 200-mm HS2 rotors now provide the stopping power. The distance to the EL XR remains deliberate: its Fox Performance Elite suspension, wireless GX AXS transmission and Magura MT7 stoppers are reserved for the top model. Compared with the muscle-powered Rift Zones (1, 2, XR), the same applies as for the entire EL trio: drive and battery complement the concept, the weight increases, and the wheel size is consistently 29-inch.
The Rift Zone EL 2 is aimed at trail riders for whom the EL 1 is too down-to-earth in its specification and who nevertheless do not want to reach the premium price class of the EL XR. It is the first choice for everyone who wants to enjoy long climbs with powerful assistance without having to do without a precise Fox suspension, the wide 12-speed gear range and dependable Code Bronze brakes for fast descents. Thanks to the "Light" philosophy, the bike feels as natural and agile as a classic mountain bike – a clear contrast to the bulky full-power e-MTBs of the Alpine Trail E series with a Bosch Performance Line CX, which are designed for maximum range and motor power rather than lightness.
