Enable Youtube videosThe Marin Madrone Trail is the legendary revival of Marin's very first bike from 1986 – wrapped in a strictly limited edition for the 40th anniversary. Frame and fork are made of butted 4130 CrMo steel, famous for its soft, direct and exceptionally comfortable ride quality. Deliberately built fully rigid, with no suspension fork and no rear shock, the bike recalls an era when mountain biking was still full of pioneering spirit. The technology, however, is thoroughly modern: A Shimano CUES 1x10 drivetrain with 10 gears and a wide-ratio 11–48-tooth cassette is operated via a special microSHIFT thumb shifter that can run in both indexed and friction mode. There is no factory-fitted lighting. Instead, the bike shines with a great deal of everyday practicality: Mounts for racks and fenders make laden trips, the commute to work or spontaneous bikepacking adventures possible. Add hand-sprayed splatter graphics, a one-piece BearMoose bar-and-stem combo, retro-style tan-wall tires and hydraulic Shimano Alfine disc brakes. Only 440 numbered bikes were made from the strictly limited run – a collector's piece with soul.
Marin traditionally names its models after famous places, hills and trails in Marin County – names like Muir Woods, Pine Mountain or Bolinas Ridge have long stood for the brand's success story. The Madrone Trail is no different: The Madrone is the Pacific madrone tree, an evergreen coastal tree of the Pacific region that is everywhere in the woodlands around Marin County. Its smooth, reddish shimmering bark and its resilient, adaptable nature stand for what makes this bike what it is: robust, individual and timelessly beautiful. The second word of the model name, Trail, refers to the terrain the bike was made for – the unpaved roads and paths where mountain biking was once born. Together, the two words make a promise: nature, trail and joy belong together.
The Madrone Trail clearly stands apart from every other model in Marin's current program. While the Rift Zone series, for example, relies on suspension frames with generous travel, aluminium and even electric assistance in some cases, the Madrone consistently remains completely without any suspension. It is the only bike in the brand's range that fully dispenses with a suspension fork and rear shock, reviving the riding feel of the early Klunker era. Technically, too, it asserts its special status. A real highlight is the Marin BearMoose bar-and-stem unit. Its design recalls the characteristic bullmoose handlebars of the early Klunker era and defines the distinctive look of the Madrone Trail. With the drivetrain, Marin deliberately combines past and present. The special microSHIFT thumb shifter can be used in both indexed and friction mode. Shifting is handled by a modern Shimano CUES 1x10 drivetrain with a wide-ratio 11–48-tooth cassette and a CNC-machined 34-tooth chainring. Added to this are the aforementioned hand-painted splatter paintwork, which makes every single bike a unique piece, as well as a serial number that marks the bike as one of only 440 examples – together with polished silver components and Maxxis Rekon Race tires with classic tan-wall sidewalls. And while virtually all other Marin off-road models are made of aluminium, the Madrone presents itself in a steely guise: The Madrone Trail is therefore not just another model in a series, but a standalone, deliberately nostalgic special piece.
The heart of the Madrone Trail is the 4130 CrMo steel frame, known for its pleasantly comfortable and direct riding feel. Combined with the rigid CrMo fork and the agile 27.5-inch wheels, it creates an uncomplicated bike that feels equally at home on relaxed trails and gravel roads as it does on the daily ride through town.
The intended use of the Madrone Trail differs fundamentally from that of Marin's fully suspended models such as the Rift Zone series. The latter are built to tame demanding trails, roots and rocks with plenty of travel and technical equipment. The Madrone Trail, by contrast, is a bike for relaxed enjoyment: fire roads, gravel roads, field tracks and easy forest paths can be explored with it at wonderfully unhurried speed. Instead of blasting over obstacles, the experience of the ride itself takes centre stage – the tangible direct contact with the ground, the warm steel feel and every single pedal stroke. At the same time, the rack and fender mounts make the bike a perfect companion for everyday life, the commute, a quick trip to the café or short bikepacking adventures over the weekend. Anyone who wants to feel a piece of mountain bike history without giving up on modern reliability will find an equally nostalgic and versatile companion in the Madrone Trail.
