Gravel Bikes – Road Bike and Mountain Bike in One

What is a gravel bike, what is it good for, and how does it differ from other types of bicycles?

A gravel bike is a versatile bicycle designed for both road and unpaved paths. Gravel bikes combine elements of road bikes, cyclocross bikes, and touring bikes, allowing you to ride comfortably on asphalt as well as on gravel, forest paths, or easy trails.

Gravel bikes and cyclocross bikes are very similar; however, gravel bikes are better suited for longer tours. Gravel bikes are fast, but not quite as fast as road bikes. However, riding on gravel is safer with a gravel bike, which one would avoid with a road bike. City bikes and trekking bikes have good suspension – gravel bikes often have even better suspension, increasing comfort and robustness when riding off-road. Gravel bikes are suitable for light to moderate terrain, but are lighter than mountain bikes. Very challenging terrain is best handled with a mountain bike. But if you are looking for a versatile, off road capable, and lightweight bike that can be used both in the city and in the countryside, you need a gravel bike.

Your Gravel Bike: Speed, Terrain or Comfort?

Since a gravel bike is so versatile, you should consider before buying where you want to set your focus:

  • Lots of road and fast riding → go for a road bike
  • Lots of gravel and forest paths → go for a mountain bike
  • Bikepacking and traveling → upright seating position and mounting points for luggage

Your dream bike: Terrain: When choosing gearing and transmission: Single-chainring setups are robust and ideal for off-road, while double-chainring setups are better suited for road and long distances. When riding off-road through mud, you should mount wider tires on your gravel bike for more grip, hydraulic disc brakes for faster braking in wet conditions, and drop bars for better control off-road. Comfort: If you travel a lot, pay attention to mounting points for racks, fenders, bottle cages and panniers. A sturdy steel frame is heavier, but certainly not the worst choice for a fully loaded gravel tour. For even more support on long tours, at Radfieber you can even find gravel e-bikes. Speed: Choose lighter frames made of carbon or aluminum frames.
