The WILHELM GRAVEL C-Line Smart.Shift is the electronic cross variant of the Schindelhauer custom bicycle line – and in garnet red a powerful statement on gravel paths. The heart is the 12-gear Pinion gearbox in the bottom bracket area, which shifts via Smart.Shift with a light press of a button in 0.2 seconds. Those who see the strong red and experience the solid, quiet gear change understand immediately: this gravel does not just want to ride – it wants to arrive.

Powered by the Gates carbon belt (39 teeth at the front, 28 at the rear). The low bottom bracket and long head and top tubes create a sporty, yet tour-ready seating position. Braking and shifting are handled by the TRP HyWire components on 160-millimetre discs. The Brooks Cambium C17 saddle and Cambium bar tape provide comfort, and the Continental Terra Trail tyre balances grip and speed. At 12.6 kilogrammes, the gearbox bicycle is noticeably more present; nevertheless, mountable mudguards, front and rear racks and optional lighting make it suitable for everyday use. The permissible total weight is 120 kilogrammes.

What WILHELM, GRAVEL and Smart.Shift stand for

WILHELM is the custom bicycle system from Schindelhauer in which every bicycle is built on request. GRAVEL names the cross and bikepacking variant for routes between road and terrain. Smart.Shift marks the electronic shifting of the Pinion C-Line gearbox with gear changes in 0.2 seconds at the touch of a button. Granatrot describes the glowing, rich red of the paintwork, giving the bicycle a striking, almost sporty appearance.

Why the gearbox concept convinces

Unlike chain drives, the Pinion gearbox sits protected near the bottom bracket and stays untouched by the terrain. The twelve gears shift electronically – fast, precise and independent of the pedal position – and the centre of gravity sits low, stabilising the ride. Together with the maintenance-free Gates belt and the HyWire brakes, the result is a drivetrain that needs little care on long tours and keeps the rider's head free for what matters.
