The WILHELM GRAVEL C-Line Smart.Shift in alu pur is the cross custom bicycle series from Schindelhauer in its purist form: bare aluminium, clear lines and a drivetrain that works without small parts. The omission of colour fits the concept – instead, the technology shines, above all the 12-gear Pinion gearbox in the bottom bracket area, which shifts via the electronic Smart.Shift system at the touch of a button in 0.2 seconds. A gravel that can be built up in various configurations.

The Gates carbon belt (39 teeth at the front, 28 at the rear) drives the fine-toothed Schindelhauer rear hub; the low bottom bracket and long head and top tubes provide a sporty, yet tour-ready seating position. Braking and shifting are handled by TRP HyWire components on 160-millimetre discs. Brooks Cambium C17 saddle and Cambium bar tape, Continental Terra Trail tyres in 40-622 and internal cable routing complete the picture. At 12.6 kilogrammes, the gearbox bicycle is stronger but lower-maintenance; mountable mudguards, front and rear racks and optional lighting ensure everyday and tour suitability. The permissible total weight is 120 kilogrammes.

What WILHELM, GRAVEL and Smart.Shift stand for

WILHELM is the custom bicycle system from Schindelhauer, in which every bicycle can be built in various configurations. GRAVEL names the cross and bikepacking variant for routes between road and terrain. Smart.Shift stands for the electronic shifting of the Pinion C-Line gearbox, which shifts via a button in 0.2 seconds. The addition alu pur describes the raw, unadorned aluminium look of the frame.

Why bare aluminium and lightning shifting complement each other

The combination seems contradictory at first glance: raw metal next to fine electronics. But that is exactly the appeal: the mechanical core of the Pinion gearbox is indestructible and hardly affected by dust and mud, while the electronics are only responsible for shifting – fast, precise, independent of the pedal position. Add the low-maintenance Gates belt, and little remains that could fail on a long gravel stage.
