The Schindelhauer Gustav impresses with its lightweight aluminium frame, practical front luggage rack and low-maintenance belt drive combined with reliable Shimano 8-speed gears. A stylish, versatile city bike for everyday use, commuting and touring with disc brakes and full equipment.

By mounting the front rack on the frame, the bike remains agile even when heavily loaded. An integral part of the rack design are the innovative VarioStraps, which can be individually adjusted to the size and shape of the load.

Gustav: the low-maintenance urban all-rounder with belt drive and frame-mounted front rack

Gustav rolls on a triple-butted aero aluminium (AL6061-T6) frame whose tubing is reinforced where loads act and trimmed where material would only add weight. Smoothly welded joints and forged dropouts with the slider belt tensioning system and belt port keep the frame stiff and the belt permanently tensioned – the reason the bike stays calm and composed even when fully loaded.

Power flows through a Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt to a Shimano Nexus 8-speed hub gear. The eight gears sit enclosed in the hub, and the 46/24-tooth ratio is chosen so climbs with luggage, quick open stretches and stop-and-go city rolling each fall into a comfortable cadence. Belt and hub gear are built for daily duty: no oily chain, no derailleur to clip the kerb, which means the bike asks for no attention in return for going about its work silently and efficiently alongside the THUN Zumba bottom bracket and Gates crank set.

Lighting is fed by a Shimano hub dynamo: Busch & Müller Lumotec Eyc N Plus at the front and ILU jr. at the rear come on the moment you set off and sit discreetly within the overall design. Curana Apollo extruded-profile mudguards, a Pletscher Twin kickstand and Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes round off a genuinely complete build, delivering controllable stopping power even when the bike is loaded. WTB Horizon tyres cushion cobbles and carry reflective strips that work from the side after dusk.

Carrying and touring are thought through: bolted to the frame rather than the fork, the front rack does not steer with the load, keeping big parcels steady, while the VarioStraps adjust to the size and shape of the cargo. A child seat mounts on the seat tube, a trailer couples at the rear axle, and bottle and lock holders screw into their frame points. Frame, belt drive, dynamo lighting and the rack concept therefore work as one system: Gustav demands little attention and carries plenty in return, from the daily commute to a fully loaded day trip.

Where the name Gustav comes from

The model name is a single word: Gustav. It is an old Germanic given name built from "Gaut" (tribe, people) and "staba" (staff), at its heart meaning something like "staff of the people" – a name associated with steadfastness and reliability. Gustav thus joins the line of traditional first names carried by the models of this brand and translates that attitude into an unpretentious, familiar look. The complete product name adds the colour designation petrol: a deep blue with a green cast that underlines the bike's sober, reduced character.

How Gustav differs from Greta and Gustav Classic Edition

The model family offers Greta alongside Gustav: the same drive, lighting, mudguards and front rack in a low-entry frame, where Gustav keeps the classic high diamond silhouette. Greta is for anyone who values an easy step-through, Gustav for the straight, sporty line. The limited Gustav Classic Edition, meanwhile, swaps the Nexus hub for a Shimano Alfine and adds polished silver components, mudguards painted in the frame colour, a Brooks leather saddle with leather grips and a LightSKIN headlight, with every bike individually engraved. Gustav in petrol remains the straightforward series version intended for daily use.

Where this bike is at home: commuting, shopping, family life and long rides

Gustav is conceived as an all-rounder in traffic – the ride to work, the shopping run, the family bike and an extended weekend loop. The relaxed position created by the longer head tube and short stem link makes short city trips as pleasant as longer stages, while the high-volume tyres turn cobbles and park paths into a preferred shortcut. The rack's high payload plus child seat and trailer options turn a commuter into a family and cargo bike, and hub dynamo lighting with mudguards keeps it usable all year round.

Compared with the other ranges of the same maker, this is the version deliberately built around comfort and everyday use: Siegfried and Viktor follow purism with a single gear and a sporty stance, Ludwig brings Alfine-hub versatility to a sporty classic, Friedrich leans on comfort parts such as the Brooks saddle and Tubus rack, and Wilhelm sits in the well-equipped touring and gearbox segment. Gustav, by contrast, combines belt drive, hub gears, dynamo lighting and the front rack from the factory into one coherent package – complemented by its female counterpart Greta with low entry as the family's second frame shape.
