The Schindelhauer Gustav impresses with its lightweight aluminium frame, practical front luggage rack and low-maintenance belt drive combined with reliable Shimano 8-speed gears. A stylish, versatile city bike for everyday use, commuting and touring with disc brakes and full equipment.

By mounting the front rack on the frame, the bike remains agile even when heavily loaded. An integral part of the rack design are the innovative VarioStraps, which can be individually adjusted to the size and shape of the load.

Gustav in ash grey: a fully equipped belt-drive bike for commuting, shopping and long rides

Gustav rests on a frame of AL6061-T6 aluminium drawn into triple-butted aero tubing: substantial where bends take loads, slender where material would only add weight. Forged dropouts with the slider belt tensioning system and belt port hold the rear wheel exactly where it belongs so the belt keeps its tension, while smoothly finished welds deliver the calm, uncluttered look this bike is known for.

Pedalling power is passed from a Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt into a Shimano Nexus hub with eight gears. With 46 teeth at the crank and 24 at the rear, the ratio suits headwind on open road, a loaded climb away from the lights and stop-and-go city traffic alike. Belt instead of chain and hub instead of derailleur also mean no oil film, nothing to re-index and no shifting at the stand: a drivetrain that keeps behaving on day one thousand as it did on day one, working quietly and efficiently alongside the THUN Zumba bottom bracket and Gates crank set.

Electricity comes from a Shimano hub dynamo in the front wheel: Busch & Müller Lumotec Eyc N Plus at the front and ILU jr. at the rear light up as soon as the bike rolls, with no batteries to tend. Curana Apollo extruded-profile mudguards, a Pletscher Twin kickstand and Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes complete the package, giving controllable stopping power even when loaded. WTB Horizon tyres with reflective strips absorb cobbles and roots and make Gustav visible from the side after dusk.

Carrying has been designed in: the front rack is bolted to the frame and does not turn with the steering, so even bulky loads stay composed, and the VarioStraps adjust to the shape and size of the cargo. Mounting points for a bottle and lock, a child seat on the seat tube and a trailer coupling at the rear axle stretch the range of use all the way to multi-day outings. Frame, belt drive, dynamo lighting and the rack concept therefore operate as one: Gustav asks for little attention and returns steady service on the commute, on shopping trips and on long rides.

Where the name Gustav comes from

The model name is deliberately plain and made of a single word: Gustav. It derives from an old Germanic given name built from "Gaut" (people, tribe) and "staba" (staff), at its core meaning something like "staff of the people" – a word root that carries support, constancy and dependability. Gustav thus joins the sequence of traditional first names used by the models of this brand and brings precisely that calm, familiar air instead of a technical label. The complete product name then adds the colour designation ash grey: a light, understated grey that further emphasises the bike's clean line.

How Gustav differs from Greta and the Classic Edition

Within the model family Gustav keeps the high diamond frame and stands for the classic straight line; Greta shares exactly the same equipment – belt drive, dynamo lighting, mudguards and front rack – but opens the frame with a low entry: identical technology, different frame shape. The limited Gustav Classic Edition, meanwhile, runs on a Shimano Alfine hub instead of the Nexus and adds polished silver components, mudguards painted in the frame colour, a Brooks leather saddle with leather grips and a LightSKIN headlight, individually engraved. Gustav in ash grey remains the clearly defined series version, delivering from the factory everything daily use calls for.

What Gustav is built for, and how it sits among the other ranges

Its territory is everyday life in town and beyond: the commute, shopping, family errands and extended weekend loops. The relaxed position created by the long head tube and compact stem link makes short journeys as pleasant as longer stages, the high-volume tyres turn cobbles into a welcome shortcut, and the rack's generous payload together with child seat and trailer options turn a commuter into a family and cargo bike – hub dynamo lighting and mudguards keep it ready all year.

Compared with the other ranges of the same maker, this is the version explicitly built around use and comfort: Siegfried and Viktor follow purism with a single gear and a sporty stance, Ludwig adds Alfine-hub versatility to a sporty classic, Friedrich leans on comfort parts such as the Brooks saddle and Tubus rack, and Wilhelm sits in the well-equipped touring and gearbox segment. Gustav, by contrast, brings belt drive, eight gears, dynamo lighting and the front rack together from the factory as one coherent package. Its female counterpart Greta stands alongside with a low entry – the second frame form of the same family, the same technology.
