The Schindelhauer Frida, featuring a Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub gear, is the elegant e-bike for anyone looking to combine style, comfort and everyday practicality. With its upright riding position, low-maintenance Gates Carbon Drive and high-quality features such as Curana mudguards, Supernova LED lights and a Tubus luggage rack, the Frida is ready for any kind of ride.

Schindelhauer is a small Berlin-based manufacturer and is in high demand. Bikes available online are usually only in stock once. That’s why we’d advise you to snap one up quickly. If a particular bike isn’t in stock, simply ask us when it will be available again.

Schindelhauer FRIEDA VIII in cream white – aluminium city bike with 8-speed hub gear and carbon belt drive

A frame tone that suggests lightness while avoiding heaviness: this FRIEDA VIII in cream white looks slim and soft, yet at 13,2 kg weighs exactly what a fully equipped city bicycle is allowed to weigh. Behind the pale lacquer sits a frame in AL6061-T6 aluminium whose triple-butted Aero-Shape tubes are reinforced precisely where force has to be transmitted on pulling away, and slimmed down where the eye is not searching anyway. Forged dropouts with a sliding tensioner, an integrated seatpost clamp, consistently internal cable routing and smoothed welds create a construction that does not change but matures.

Shifting happens through a Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub gear. Eight cleanly graduated ratios between 46 teeth at the front and 24 at the rear cover exactly the range an everyday bicycle genuinely needs in town: flat stages, descents, gradients along the river, making up time after a lights-out series. The entire shifting logic sits protected inside the rear wheel, and a glance at the gear indicator on the handlebar is enough to know which gear you are riding in.

This calm gear logic is completed by the drivetrain: a Gates Carbon Drive CDX transmits power via a 115-tooth belt in CenterTrack geometry. Carbon fibres embedded in plastic work more efficiently than a conventional chain, last a multiple of its service life and weigh about a fifth less. Above all, trousers and frame stay clean because no oil circulates – with a light tone like cream white, that fact is not cosmetic but the reason the bicycle still looks as it did on the day of purchase after two winters. Readjustment is handled by a sliding system right at the forged dropout; the manufacturer provided space for it in the frame itself.

Lighting runs entirely on the bicycle's own current: a Supernova Pure3 sits at the front wheel in the Shutter Precision PD-8X hub dynamo, and a Supernova E3 handles the rear. Both lamps are integrated into the rim and do not disturb the calm, pale silhouette. The benefit of this solution: no charging cable, no fading output, constant visibility in prolonged rain or on late journeys home. On a bicycle with belt and hub gear this carefreeness counts twice over, because two maintenance points that other designs carry from the start simply do not exist here.

For longer day stages, the FRIEDA VIII is well prepared: the custom Tubus Fly rear carrier takes bags, Curana D-Light mudguards keep water off in wet conditions, and the 35-622 Continental GP Urban tyres roll pleasantly over asphalt, cobbles and hard surfaces without turning sluggish. The slightly elongated wheelbase gives the kickstand secure footing and leaves sufficient space between heel and rear panniers. A mount for a bottle cage or lock is provided and a kickstand can be retrofitted. Speed control is handled by mechanical disc brakes with a 160 mm diameter, which bite reliably regardless of weather and daily form. Added to this are the Brooks B17 S Lady saddle, Schindelhauer Ergo leather grips and the Schindelhauer Jane aluminium handlebar – a complete package of comfort and control.

How the designation FRIEDA VIII in cream white comes about

The first word is a proper name that the Berlin manufacturer gave its comfort-oriented city bicycle and itself subtitles as “the comfortable one”. No official account of the first name's origin is given – this is deliberately not a technical abbreviation but a term describing character. It describes the geometry: upright rather than sporting, clear rather than tucked down, calm rather than hectic. Created as the feminine half of a deliberately chosen pair of models, the FRIEDA forms the counterpart to the male-named version with identical technology.

The Roman numeral behind it is the actual information about the bicycle: VIII stands for eight gears of the Alfine hub. This number is the binding identifier for the gear level across the entire family – the variant with eleven gears correspondingly carries the XI. Anyone reading only the numeral at the end knows at once how finely this bicycle is graduated. The colour designation cream white then describes the surface: a light, matt lacquer that shapes the soft appearance and deliberately recedes into its surroundings. Together, this name forms a complete short description – character, gear level and colour in three components.

Eight gears instead of eleven: the gap to the sister model

Within the Frieda family the FRIEDA VIII is the reduced version – reduced solely in gear range. Frame, drive and equipment are identical to the eleven-speed model: the same AL6061-T6, the same Gates Carbon Drive CDX with 115-tooth belt, the same Shutter Precision hub dynamo with Supernova lamps, the same Tubus Fly carrier, the same Curana mudguards and the same saddle. The difference lies solely in how finely the ratio between 46 and 24 teeth is divided.

And that gradation is a question of ambition, not quality. Eight gears are enough for every route that runs on the flat or has to be completed only over a moderate climb – precisely what makes up the everyday life of a city bicycle. As soon as, however, a stretch with luggage, a longer excursion into the surrounding countryside or genuine elevation comes into play, eight gears reach their limits and the bicycle oscillates between two steps to maintain speed. That is exactly where the eleven-speed sister is the better choice – while anyone riding short distances and wanting as few shifting actions as possible is ideally and even more lightly served by the VIII. Both versions are diamond frames in sizes from 50 to 58 centimetres.

The Limited Edition finishes of the XI, pearl blue and petrol, do not change this technology either – they are colour variants limited to 150 individually engraved pieces without any additional equipment.

What this FRIEDA VIII in cream white is for day to day

This FRIEDA VIII is made for everyday movement through the city: to work, to the shops, to appointments, to errands that grow into a longer loop in the afternoon. Frame, belt, hub, mudguards and dynamo light are matched to that rhythm: fully functional in rain and dust, free of maintenance effort for months, and light enough not to become a burden in cellar, on a kickstand or at the workplace. Radfieber lists it consistently under the Urban category, in diamond frame form.

Within the manufacturer's portfolio the family occupies a clearly circumscribed technical position: belt and conventional hub gearing, consistently chosen instead of a derailleur or a gear hub on the bottom bracket. Other series from the same house serve different expectations – city bikes with a gear hub, sportier track and singlespeed concepts, electrically assisted models with mid-drive. The Frieda family is the interpretation that places comfort, an upright seating position and quiet running above sporting performance.

A male counterpart exists as well: the matching Friedrich carries the second name from the same pair and offers the same idea in a men's version. Anyone comparing therefore chooses not between techniques, but between two readings of the same philosophy of comfort – supplemented by the choice between eight and eleven gears. In cream white, a characteristic effect is added: the pale lacquer brings the upright seating position and the delicate lines of the frame particularly to the fore, and the bicycle blends into its surroundings instead of standing out from them.
