Ortlieb – Company for Waterproof Details
The Ortlieb company owes its name to its founder, Hartmut Ortlieb, and was founded in 1982 in Nuremberg, Germany, where its headquarters remain to this day. The invention of the first Ortlieb pannier arose from the personal need to produce truly waterproof equipment for his own cycling and climbing trips. It was made on his mother's sewing machine from truck tarpaulin. More than three decades later, Ortlieb produces high-quality equipment for every need, every type of weather, and every type of terrain. In the cycling segment, Ortlieb continues to have a strong presence in the outdoor sector, but has long since expanded its offerings to include solutions for everyday urban life. Ortlieb's fundamental commitment to quality is evident in innovative details such as roll-top closures, waterproof zippers, Velcro fasteners, and sealing lips, which continue to define their products today.

Ortlieb – Waterproof Panniers from Nuremberg
Ortlieb was founded in 1982 in Nuremberg, Germany, by Hartmut Ortlieb. The company name derives from the founder's surname. The idea came about when Hartmut Ortlieb was on a wet bike tour and could not find any waterproof luggage. He sewed the first pannier from a truck tarpaulin on his mother's sewing machine. In 1984 he introduced high-frequency welding technology, which guarantees one hundred percent waterproofness. Today the company employs around 300 people and manufactures exclusively in Germany.
The very first product was a waterproof bicycle pannier made from truck tarpaulin with a roll closure. Over time further bike bags such as the Back-Roller series, handlebar bags, frame bags and seat bags were added. The range was expanded to include backpacks, travel bags, dry bags and accessories such as the Quick Rack carrier. The bikepacking line featuring Fork-Pack, Frame-Pack and Seat-Pack opened up new areas of use. All products are waterproof and repairable.
Ortlieb products are sold in bike shops, outdoor stores and online shops in more than fifty countries worldwide. The exact number of outlets amounts to several thousand dealers. The brand's own online shop and physical retailers complement each other. Ortlieb is the market leader for waterproof bicycle panniers.
