muliCycles was founded in December 2016 by brothers Sören and Jonas Gerhardt. The idea emerged in 2015 when Sören lived in Hamburg without a car, had limited space, and needed to transport two children – the vision was a cargo bike that does not become a burden itself. The name "muli" is derived from the mule, a frugal, load-bearing animal that reliably carries heavy goods even in tight spaces. Initial funding was secured through a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2017. Production started in a converted barn in Driedorf in the Westerwald region. In 2021, the company moved to Cologne-Ehrenfeld into its own "muli Factory". Today, over 80 people work there.
The first model was the muli Muskel – a compact cargo bike without a motor, featuring a foldable basket, small 16/20-inch wheels and a sturdy steel frame. In 2020, the muli Motor st, the first version with an integrated mid-motor, launched and immediately became the bestseller. In 2022, muli switched frame production to 100% recycled steel. The muli Motor eu followed in 2024, with 90% of all components manufactured within the EU. In 2025, a second welding robot was added at the Cologne factory, enabling complete in-house frame production.
muliCycles bikes are now sold through around 150 dealers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland – with a focus on major cities such as Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and Cologne. muli is also represented internationally, including in Canada and the USA. Since its founding, the company has delivered several thousand cargo bikes in total.
With muliCycles, you can choose between the Muskel model without a motor and the Motor models with electric drive (Shimano STEPS mid-motor or hub motor variant). All frames are made of chromoly steel, with powder coating available in various colours. For the drivetrain, you can choose between a classic chain and a low-maintenance GATES belt drive. Gearing is via hub gears (Shimano Nexus, partly with Di2 automatic shifting). Singlespeed is not offered. There is no division into men's and women's bikes – the muli is available in one frame size (One Size) and adapts to different body heights through adjustable seat and handlebar positions.
