DSX serves as the model code for Marin's flat-bar gravel family, whose frames derive from the Gestalt X geometry with a curved handlebar. Remarkably, no digit follows the series code here: unlike the DSX 1, DSX 2 and DSX 3 variants, this bike carries no equipment index and thereby marks the entry position in the line. Khaki Red names the frame's colour combination, made up of a khaki base tone and red accents. The company name contributes nothing to interpreting the name.
The DSX is the most affordable member of the family and, unlike the higher-tier models, does without the Series 3 aluminium frame: it uses the Series 2 version made of 6061 aluminium and a CrMo steel fork with straight blades that reduces vibration. The drivetrain comes as a 1x9 with a microSHIFT Advent rear derailleur with clutch and a SunRace cassette (11-46T); the DSX 1 shifts with Shimano CUES 1x10, the DSX 2 with Shimano Deore 1x12, the DSX 3 with SRAM Apex 1 and the DSX FS with Deore/SLX plus a suspension fork. Only the base model does without a carbon fork and tubeless rims – but it remains the value-for-money champion of the range.
The DSX is aimed at everyone who wants to enter the gravel world on a small budget: it is a fitness and urban gravel bike suited to commuting, training and exploring gravel paths. The 45 mm wide WTB Riddler tyres, the upright riding position and the Tektro disc brakes provide control on mixed surfaces, and thanks to internal cable routing a dropper seatpost can be retrofitted later. While the pricier DSX variants with carbon and more gears serve more sporty demands, the DSX stays deliberately simple and robust – the ideal gateway, also compared with the drop-bar Gestalt model, which requires a different hand position.
