The Auburn Rubber Company in the USA manufactured the first inflatable rubber animals in the 1880s, including ducks. However, the real breakthrough came in the 1940s: sculptor Peter Ganine designed a floating plastic duck in 1949 that sold millions in the USA. He had his design patented – over 50 million units were sold. The squeaking sound is created by a valve in the beak or belly that releases air when squeezed.
Today squeaky ducks are available in countless variations. The classic is the yellow bath duck with an orange beak, offered by manufacturers such as Munchkin, NUK or Fisher-Price. In addition there are themed and collectible series: Disney ducks (Donald Duck & Friends), profession ducks (police officer, firefighter, doctor), animal costume ducks (unicorn, shark, dinosaur), Jumboduck (giant duck) as well as colorful rainbow and glitter ducks. Even licensed products like Star Wars or Marvel ducks are available. The Amsterdam Duck Store and the Krakow Duck Store chain have specialized in merchandise and souvenir ducks.
Squeaky ducks are experiencing a major comeback as a bicycle accessory. The best-known variant at Radfieber is the Deko Duck from the in-house brand Liix. It measures 7 × 6 × 6 cm, weighs 50 g and is attached to the handlebar with a silicone strap without tools. The duck squeaks when pressed, can swim and is weather-resistant. It is available in numerous variants: Ride & Smile Yellow (yellow with smiley), Ride & Smile Rosy, Ladybird (ladybug motif), Hearts (heart helmet), Eightball (billiard ball design), Racing Stripe Blue, Metallic Pink, Color Splash and Naked (without helmet). All helmets are removable.
In addition to Liix, there are many other manufacturers internationally. Winkee (also known as Bike Duck) offers squeaky ducks with a propeller helmet – the propeller spins while riding in the wind. Helmet motifs include flames, flower power, watermelon and other designs. BikeDuck from Great Britain sells collectible ducks with LED light and interchangeable accessories such as helmets, sunglasses and chains. The Amsterdam Duck Store offers a Bicycle Rubber Duck with Dutch bicycle prints and the inscription "I want to ride my bicycle". Asian manufacturers such as Thalassay and Toki Toy Box also offer ducks with integrated LED light and horn – a combination of decoration, horn and rear light.
