Enable Youtube videosThe Cambium C17 is a saddle for bikepacking, commuting, gravel and road riding. Unlike the classic Brooks saddles, its top is made not of leather but of vulcanised natural rubber and nylon. It is made in Italy.
The rubber used for the Cambium top is harvested from trees and then vulcanised. It was chosen for its flexibility and durability and is pressed into the desired saddle shape. The material is elastic, strong and returns to its original shape after load. It follows the movements of the rider. Unlike leather, the saddle needs no break-in period and, according to the manufacturer, is as comfortable on the first ride as on the hundredth.
The Cambium is one of the few bicycle saddles with a truly suspended surface over a metal frame, similar to the construction of Brooks leather saddles. The flexible rubber surface meets a supporting structure that allows a little flex. This naturally absorbs shocks and vibrations on poor roads or off-road. The C17 measures 283 mm in length and 164 mm in width and weighs 464 g. The rail is made of powder-coated steel, and the top is attached with aluminium rivets.
The vulcanised rubber surface is fully waterproof without any treatment or proofing. Wet weather therefore does not affect performance, which is an advantage on rainy rides and in everyday use. According to Brooks, an occasional night outdoors will not harm the Cambium either. No maintenance is required. Brooks England provides a two-year guarantee on Cambium saddles against defects in materials and workmanship.
The C17 is suited to bikepacking, commuting, gravel and road riding. The Cambium range counts among Brooks' performance-oriented saddles, with low weight and modern materials. Those who prefer to avoid leather, or want a saddle without a break-in period or upkeep, will find an alternative here.
